Mark Turgeon sure is making Maryland look smart for hiring him.
First, he kept Bino Ranson, the key to the pipeline for Baltimore's talent, on his staff. Then earlier today, Turgeon made it official that Dalonte Hill, who is connected all over DC's AAU scene, will also be joining his staff. (We wrote a lengthy post on Hill's significance here.) And this evening, news broke that Nick Faust will be headed to Maryland next season.
Faust, if you've forgotten, was the jewel of Gary Williams' recruiting class. A lengthy, athletic 6'6" wing, Faust ranks 44th in our consensus recruiting rankings. But when Williams retired, Faust asked for and was given a release from his letter of intent. And while he did look around at other schools, Faust eventually decided that Maryland was the best place for him.
"I was considering other schools. Just weighed out everything. Maryland was the best place for me," Faust told Jeff Borzello of CBSSports.com.
"Maryland is definitely on a mission from day one."
Sterling Gibbs is now committed to Texas after getting a release from Maryland. Martin Breunig has not yet made up his mind. But, as I said earlier, Faust was the jewel of the Maryland recruiting class, and the fact that Turgeon has brought him back into the fold is a very good sign.
