UNC got some bad news this afternoon when it was discovered that one of their prized freshmen, 6'7" wing Reggie Bullock, would be out for the season with a torn meniscus. He will undergo surgery on the knee.
"I am just heart-broken for Reggie," UNC coach Roy Williams said in a prepared statement. "He had surgery on the same knee last year and that has bothered him at various times throughout the season. There's no doubt that is why he has struggled somewhat with his shot over the last few weeks, but at the same time he's played really well defensively, helped us on the boards and often gave us a nice spark off the bench."
"He's had a great attitude all year. Plus, he's gone through so much with the loss of his grandmother in January, whom he was so very close to. Every person on this team will support Reggie and help him get ready for next year."
Bullock hurt the knee in the first half of Sunday's win over Maryland, but its not the first time he has had a problem with it. He missed the UNC-Asheville game earlier this season and sat out a couple of practices after the Clemson game in January. He had surgery on that knee last season.
Bullock has been inconsistent this season. He's had a couple of games where he found his shooting stroke, but largely he's been an erratic jump shooter, possibly because of the knee.
This puts UNC in a bit of a quandary. Thanks to the defections of the Wear twins and Larry Drew and the decision to kick Will Graves off the team back in October, Roy Williams will be down to just eight scholarship players.
