Our Emery Board series is getting smaller seemingly by the day.
On Monday, Arkansas-Pine Bluff and Alcorn State joined the ranks of the, well, non-winless while Duke suffered their first loss of the season on Wednesday night.
On Thursday, it was UNC-Greensboro's turn.
The Spartans were 0-15 on the season and 0-5 in conference play heading into last night's game against Appalachian State, a team that has already knocked off Tulsa this year. They then proceeded to dig themselves a 41-28 hole at the half.
But the Spartans started out the second half with a 15-3 run as a Brian Cole three cut the App State lead to 44-43. With 8:13 left in the game, Brandon Evans scored on a lay in to give the Spartan's their first lead since five minutes into the game. UNCG was able to push that lead to five points with 3:23 left.
In fact, the Mountaineers got close enough that Omar Carter's missed layup with eight seconds left in the game would have given them the lead.
But Carter missed and the Spartans hung on to win.
It was their first win of the season.
It also leaves Centenary as the only school in D-I hoops left without a win, and I feel bad even making light of it. Centenary is going to D-III next season. Their roster is currently made up with a lot of players that were brought in to play at the D-III level, not D-I. I would not be surprised if they did not win a game all season.
I'll tell you this -- I'll be rooting for them. I bleed Centenary Gentlemen Maroon and White.
