Friday's Shootaround: The ACC's struggles, and a couple of great tournament games

Coaches vs. Cancer

No. 4 Pitt 79, Maryland 70: See our write up from last night.

No. 22 Texas 90, No. 16 Illinois 84: See our write up from last night.

Charleston Classic

No. 21 Georgetown 80, Coastal Carolina 61: The Hoyas once again got big performances out of their big three in the back court -- Jason Clark has 22 points, 4 boards, and 4 assists; Austin Freeman added 20 points; and Chris Wright notched 12 points and 12 assists. The three combined for 13 of the Hoya's 14 threes. Also of note -- Julian Vaughn finish with 11 points, 7 boards, and 5 blocks, although he and Nate Lubick combined for 8 turnovers.

Wofford 79, USC Upstate 61: The Terriers got 35 points from Jamar Diggs and Noah Dahlmann as they won their first game of the season.

NC State 85, East Carolina 65The Wolfpack picked up a nice win over East Carolina despite getting a total of 16 minutes from senior starters Tracy Smith and Javier Gonzalez. Smith injured his knee early in the first half, and Gonzalez was in foul trouble all game. Nevertheless, Lowe's youngster performed, using a 42-10 run that spanned both halves to put this one out of reach.

George Mason 78, Charlotte 56: The Patriots jumped out to an early first half lead, but allowed the 49ers to battle back and cut the lead to six at the half. The second half was a different story, as Luke Hancock scored 13 of his career high 18 points in what turned into a blowout.

Puerto Rico Tip-Off

West Virginia 84, Davidson 70: The Mountaineers jumped out to a 15 point lead at the half, but they were never quite able to put away the Wildcats in the second half despite Davidson not hitting a three until the final minutes -- they were 2-22. Truck Bryant had 22 points and Dan Jennings was really active on the glass, notching 11 boards. Overall, however, it was a bit of a disappoint performance from WVU.

Vanderbilt 59, Nebraska 49: John Jenkins scored 22 points and sparked a late 16-3 run that fueled the Commodore's come-from-behind victory. Jeff Taylor had 14 points, but he seemed to vanish down the stretch.

No. 8 North Carolina 107, Hofstra 63: The Heels looked really impressive in dominating a pretty good Hofstra team. The two most important performances for me -- Harrison Barnes had 19 points (most in the first half) while scoring in a variety of ways, while Kendall Marshall had 9 assists, the majority of which were on gorgeous, pinpoint passes. He may be the answer at the point. UNC was 12-17 from three.

Minnesota 95, Western Kentucky 77: The Gophers one of the most impressive teams here early in the season. They've now beaten their third straight quality mid-major opponent. Ralph Sampson had 22 points, 8 boards, and 7 blocks. Trevor Mbakwe went for 18 and 10. Rodney Williams and Blake Hoffarber had 17 and 16 points respectively.

The ACC Struggles

Yale 75, Boston College 67: Yale hit 12-21 shots from deep, and despite 30 points from Reggie Jackson, the Bulldogs built a lead that was as big as 16 in the second half. BC never really made it close.

Stanford 81, Virginia 60: The Cavs had a couple of promising wins to start the season, building some expectation for the year. Then they went out west and got run out of the gym by the Cardinal in the second half. Jeremy Green had 21 points as Stanford moves to 2-0.

Other Notable Scores

Arizona 83, New Mexico State 57: Sticking in the Pac-10, Arizona posted an impressive win over a NMSU team that is expected to compete for the WAC title. They only shot 5-22 from deep, but Derrick Williams had 27 points and 14 boards as the Wildcats really pulled away late.

Iona 81, Richmond 77 2OT: We tried to tell you Iona was good. Richmond, who had looked so impressive in their first two games, got beaten up on the back boards as the Gaels grabbed 16 offensive rebounds.

No. 3 Kansas State 76, Presbyterian 67: The Wildcats really struggled down the stretch against the Blue Hose. Up 14 points at the hal, Presbyterian was able to whittle the lead all the way down to three with under two minutes left in the game. The Wildcats didn't shoot particularly well and allowed 9-15 shooting from three by the Blue Hose.

No. 14 Missouri 66, Western Illinois 61: Nerves were on full display for the Tigers last night as they struggled to an ugly win over WIU. They shot just 14-27 from the line, were trailing 57-56 with 2:36 left on the clock, and didn't put a single player in double figures.

No. 17 Baylor 63, Jackson State 49: Baylor got 20 points from Perry Jones as the Bears never trailed, but guard play once again was an issue. In the last game before LaceDarius Dunn returns, the Bear's turned the ball over a whopping 26 times.

Central Florida 65, South Florida 59: UCF got a balanced effort as they continued to create a buzz for themselves this season. UCF held the Bulls without a point for a key four minutes stretch late in the game.
