USA Basketball's Select team announced

Earlier today, USA Basketball released their Select team roster, 20 rising juniors and seniors that will spend July 20th-23rd out in Vegas to train with and practice against the USA National Team. They will be coached by Jay Wright and Lorenzo Romar.

  • Lavoy Allen, PF, Sr., Temple
  • William Buford, SG, Jr., Ohio State
  • LaceDarius Dunn, SG, Sr., Baylor
  • Jimmer Fredette, PG, Sr., BYU
  • Scotty Hopson, SF, Jr., Tennessee
  • Scoop Jardine, PG, Jr., Syracuse
  • JaJuan Johnson, C, Sr., Purdue
  • Jon Leuer, PF, Sr., Wisconsin
  • Shelvin Mack, PG, Jr., Butler
  • Marcus Morris, PF, Jr., Kansas
  • Jacob Pullen, PG, Sr., Kansas State
  • John Shurna, PF, Jr., Northwestern
  • Kyle Singler, SF, Sr., Duke
  • Chris Singleton, SF, Jr., Florida State
  • Nolan Smith, PG, Sr., Duke
  • Howard Thompkins, C, Jr., Georgia
  • Mike Tisdale, C, Sr., Illinois
  • Kemba Walker, PG, Jr., UConn
  • Chris Wright, PF, Sr., Dayton
  • Tyler Zeller, C, Jr., UNC
That's a pretty good team.

But if this group is being brought to Vegas to scrimmage the Senior National team, the obvious question is who starts? Well, SI.com's Luke Winn asked that very question on twitter this afternoon. The results?:

1st Team:
  • 1. Jacob Pullen
  • 2. LaceDarius Dunn
  • 3. Kyle Singler
  • 4. Marcus Morris
  • 5. JaJuan Johnson
2nd Team:
  • 1a. Kemba Walker
  • 1b. Jimmer Fredette
  • 1c. Nolan Smith
  • 4. Chris Singleton
  • 5. Trey Thompkins
There aren't many changes I would make to either of these teams. Keep in mind, we aren't putting together a team to play in college. These guys are going to be going up against the NBA's best. This group is loaded in the back court, but the majority of those back court players project as point guards at the professional level. (How many good point guards are on this team? Shelvin Mack didn't even sniff one of the first two teams.) I don't think many people will argue Lace Dunn is a better basketball player than Nolan Smith, but can Smith -- or Fredette or Walker, for that matter, compete defensively against an NBA two-guard?

Singler, Morris, and Johnson are fairly obvious picks up front -- all three could very well end up being all-americans this season. At the point, I would probably start Smith over Pullen. Nothing against the Kansas State star, but I think Smith proved himself during Duke's run to a title last season and is primed for a breakout season. That said, Pullen may actually be the best scorer out of this group, so I could go either way. Dunn may not seem like the best two-guard in the country, but when your other options are Wiliam Buford and Scotty Hopson, Dunn isn't a bad choice.

Shelvin Mack is better than both "starting"' guards. Hell, Jacob Pullen would probably say as much the way he put the smackdown on KSU in the Elite 8.

I would say that "smackdown" in the Elite Eight was as much credit to the double OT Sweet Sixteen game K-State had to play two nights before. They didn't have their legs against Butler.
