Today, the AP announced the national Coach and Player of the Year award winners, surprising absolutely no one by selecting Ohio State's Evan Turner and Syracuse's Jim Boeheim.
Turner, despite breaking his back and missing six games, has been all but a lock the last month and a half of the season. He received 54 of the 65 votes, with John Wall getting nine votes and Da'Sean Butler and (wait for it) Luke Harangody (what?!?) both receiving one.
As far as Boeheim is concerned, this is his first career Coach of the Year award, and it was well deserved. He took a team that lost Jonny Flynn, Paul Harris, and Eric Devendorf from unranked to a Big East regular season title and a No. 1 seed. He was 20 games for a record 32nd time this season.
Both of those choices were fairly easy to predict.
But what no one is talking about is the Adolph Rupp awards.
So for those that don't know, the Rupp award is one of six national player of the year awards, also including the Naismith, the Wooden, the NABC, the AP, and the Oscar Robertson awards. The Rupp award is presented by the Commonwealth Athletic Club of Kentucky, a non-profit organization established in 1972 by former players and colleagues of, who else, Adolph Rupp.
You know, the guy who coached Kentucky? Four national titles at Kentucky? Has an arena named after him ... at Kentucky?
Yeah, that Adolph Rupp.
So guess who won the Rupp Awards for player and coach of the year.
John Wall and John Calipari.
Hmm...
I wonder why?
