West Virginia beat Villanova in an overtime thriller yesterday afternoon.
West Virginia dug themselves a huge hole. Struggling in the first half against a Villanova defense that has been, well, less than stellar this season, the Mountaineers woke up in the second half, overcoming a 13 point deficit to take a late lead. Da'Sean Butler (who else) hit the big three that put WVU ahead, and two free throws to push the WVU lead to three, before Corey Fisher banged a three to force overtime.
In the extra period, Butler banked in a one-handed prayer that put the Mountaineers ahead for good. Reynolds had a wide-open three at the buzzer to win the game, which he missed.
Now, this game was largely forgettable. The only thing on the line was seeding, and the game play was borderline unwatchable for the first 35 minutes.
But there will be some plays that people remember, most notably Scottie Reynolds ... taking out press row.
I was waiting for Gus Johnson to make an epic call, but alas, all I am going to remember about Gus is his glasses. I didn't know Steve Erkell was calling games these days.
