Tuesday's Shootaround: A pair of ugly games on Big Monday

Villanova 92, Louisville 84: This was not a pretty game - 44 turnovers, 67 fouls, 94 free throws, and 2 hours and 40 minutes to complete regulation. Louisville jumped out to a lead that grew to as big as 17 in the first half as they forced 17 Wildcats turnovers. The Cardinals pressure was fantastic. The problem? Villanova's was just as good, and after opening a 38-21 lead, Louisville allowed Villanova to climb back into the game by going on a 15-5 run to make it 43-36 at the break.

In the second half, Villanova went on a 17-2 run to take the lead as Scottie Reynolds took over. He scored 30 of his 36 points in the final 20 minutes, including the last 16 for Nova over a 6:05 stretch. Louisville was able to hang around in the second half because they crashed the offensive glass (23 o-boards) and were hitting their free throws (39-45). But as the ref's whistles tightened, slowing this game to a crawl down the stretch, Louisville couldn't put together a sustained run. While they never got down by more than nine, once Villanova took control of this game the Cardinals never regained the lead.

Samardo Samuels played as well as he has all season. He finished with 21 points and 7 boards, going 13-13 from the line and 4-4 from the field. But Louisville just didn't get him the ball enough. The Cards shot 7-33 from three, and on too many occasions ignored Samuels when he had a defender on his back. With the amount of fouls being called in this one, and the way Samuels was knocking down free throws, simply throwing the ball into the post was almost a guarantee to score points.

Oklahoma 62, Oklahoma State 57 OT: Willie Warren scored 15 points and added 7 assists while Tiny Gallon went for 13 points and 18 boards as the Sooners outlasted the Pokes in overtime. Midway through the second half, James Anderson looked like he got kneed in the head on a drive to the rim. The hit cut his head, and he went out of the game for a good four-to-five minute stretch. His absence sparked the Sooners, who immediately went on a 17-3 run to take a 51-45 lead. But OK State would come back, scoring five points in the final 20 seconds to force OT. In the extra frame, Tommy Mason-Griffin hit a three to give the Sooners the lead, and OK State was never able to put any momentum together offensively. Marshall Moses had 16 points and 13 boards in the loss.

Louisiana Tech 79, Boise State 64: If you aren't already, it is time to start keeping track of La Tech. Magnum Rolle had 18 points and 12 boards to lead four players in double figures as the Bulldogs won their fourth straight road game and ninth straight overall. They are now 16-2 on the season, 4-0 in the WAC.
