The Buzzer-Beater none of us saw

I hope you enjoyed th3 weekend.

After all, it was a great weekend of hoops. There were great games, great moments, and a bunch of great finishes.

Saturday featured the most single-day buzzer-beaters of the season. Four of them were documented by the internet's finest (Creighton, Penn, Pacific, Virginia Tech).

They were also ranked by Jeff Eisenberg.

But clearly we didn't do enough sleuthing, because there was a fifth buzzer-beater.



That's Ty Greene of USC-Upstate hitting a game-winning three-pointer against Lipscomb on Saturday night. The Spartans trailed by 13 with 12 minutes left, but Greene, who finished with a game-high 17 points, led a comeback, and capped it off with the game-winner.

The win moved the Spartans to 11-4 in the Atlantic Sun and 18-10 overall, which is a far cry from the team's 5-25overall  and 4-16 A-Sun record from just a year ago.

POSTERIZED: Kenny Gabriel puts it in reverse

Kenny Gabriel is doing his mightiest to make us pay attention to Auburn basketball. Sure, the Tigers are 4-8 in the SEC and 14-12 overall, but they just defeated No.23 Mississippi State on Saturday night, ending a three-game losing streak.

Just look at some of Gabriel's stats: 12.3ppg, 7.9rpg, 2.4bpg and 1.7apg. But his most impressive feats don't get mentioned in the box score.

He's one of the top dunkers in the SEC and the entire country.

If you need more convincing, just peep the following video.



That's the best reverse dunk we've seen all season.

I really like Gabriel. He's one of (If not the) most under-appreciated player in the SEC. But dunks like this one should help more to make more people appreciate his work.

POSTERIZED: The Scandinavian Slam

Davidson put up a valiant effort against Wichita State in Saturday's BracketBuster game, but wound up losing 91-74. While they didn't get the victory, the Wildcats got the upperhand in the "Monsterous Dunk" category.

Chris Czerapowicz, a sophomore guard from Sweden, threw down a huge #POSTERIZED jam during Davidson's final comeback push.

And to think, I thought Sweden was only known for producing beautiful women...

VIDEO: Virginia Tech has some late-game magic of their own

Virginia Tech finally got some blessings from the basketball gods on Saturday.

Two days removed from their heartbreaking loss to Florida State and Michael Snaer, the Hokies had their own dose of late-game magic in overtime against Georgia Tech.

After Mfon Udofia hit a tough jumper to put the Yellow Jackets up two, Dorenzo Hudson grabbed a loose ball in front of the Hokie's bench and launched a 3-pointer as time expired.



It's nice to see the Hokies catch a break of their own. Sure, they're not even a bubble team this season, but it seems like VaTech always get the proverbial "shaft".

Tom Gugliotta, yes THAT Tom Gugliotta, got ejected from a game he had no involvement in

Every so often a fan gets a bit too out-of-hand at a sporting event and has to be removed from the premises.

We've all seen it before, whether on TV or in-person. It's just part of the sports culture.

But have you ever seen a former-NBA All-Star and a former college point guard get ejected from a college basketball game...by the referee

I sure haven't.

When I was informed that Tom Gugliotta and Chris Corchiani, both former-North Carolina State players, were ejected from today's NC-State vs. Florida State game, I figured that they were assistant coaches who had drawn the ire of the referees.

The only problem is that neither Gugliotta or Corchiani are members of the NC-State coaching staff.

Just peep the video.



I don't know what either of them did, but referee Karl Hess certainly didn't like it.

I hope Hess had a good reason, because the last thing a school like NC-State needs is one of their highly-visible alumni to be upset with the athletic program. After the week NC-State has had, the last thing they need is a viral video featuring two of their more recognizable alums.

But more to the point, "Googs" was in NBA Jam for Christ sake! How are you gonna do him like that?

MEAC star leads by example

BALTIMORE, MD -

In the halls outside of the Coppin State Physical Education Complex, flanked by his mother and father, Jay Threatt is all smiles.

And with good reason.

The Delaware State senior guard was minutes removed from assisting on the game-winning basket as the Hornets rallied from behind to defeat the Coppin State Eagles 84-81. The win extended the Hornet's win-streak to six games, and Threatt finished with 11 assists, leaving him just ten assists shy of becoming the school's all-time leader.

He is a diminutive point guard with the heart of a lion. Named as one of the 16-best lock-down defenders in the country, Threatt's 2.95spg rank second in Division-I. He is a relentless competitor, fighting through injuries and rarely ever taking a rest. This season alone, Threatt has played the entire 40 minutes seven different times.

Off the court, he's just as active. His smile is so big it could light up even the darkest of caves. His personality so big, that it eclipses his 5-foot-11, 175-pound frame. The positive energy that radiates from him is borderline-contagious.

In the cavernous white hallways, a congregation of Jay's relatives (his mother, Cheryl is from Baltimore) hugged, smiled and took pictures. His father, Jay Threatt Sr., was glowing.

"It's crazy, even way back to when they were just kids on the playground, Jay and Jarvis (his younger brother and freshman guard at Delaware) were always leaders, always field generals. You could just see it in their body language and in the way they communicated."

But for Threatt, those skills were honed and sharpened by adversity.

Growing up outside of Richmond, VA, Threatt was a three-time member of the All-District team at Highland Springs. As a senior, he was named to the All-Metro, All-Region and honorable mention All-State teams, thus earning a scholarship to play for George Mason University.

As a youth, he watched and idolized Allen Iverson, an undersized guard and Virginia-native like Threatt, who was as tenacious on defense as he was explosive on offense. But just like Iverson, Threatt found himself in legal trouble prior to his college enrollment.

In June of 2007, just two months after signing his Letter of Intent with George Mason, Threatt was arrested in connection to a carjacking case in Henrico County, VA. According to the report, Threatt was the get-away driver for two men that attempted to steal a car at traffic stop outside of Richmond. The judge agreed that Threatt had been caught in the "wrong place at the wrong time", and all the charges against him were dropped.


"I was caught taking it all for granted. Going to college for free, playing basketball at a high level. I realized it could all be taken from me at any time. I had to grow up quick. I'm seventeen, in there with grown men. I had to grow up."

Threatt attended George Mason his freshman year but saw little playing time. When the coaches who recruited him left George Mason for other jobs, Threatt decided to transfer.

But Like any good leader, Threatt adjusted and responded, and Delaware State has been reaping the benefits ever since. "I love being the leader. It's part of my position. Even if it wasn't, that's part of my personality. I like to take over, I've been through the fire."

It's his past experiences that have given him the confidence to persevere. He's battled through injuries, and a lengthy seven-game losing streak.

"I had to battle through some injuries earlier, and winning isn't easy. You have to want it. You have to earn it. I don't need every stat. I don't need to score. My job is to be the coach on the floor."

And that's exactly what Threatt has been doing. He has 43 assists and 21 steals in the last six games, all Delaware State victories. But more importantly, he has served as guidance for freshman Tahj Tate, the team's leading scorer. Tate scored 29 points against Notre Dame earlier in the season, but was suspended for four games due to "conduct detrimental to the program".

But Threatt, who has been through the fire before, was there for the freshman playmaker.

"I'm here to motivate him. Me and Tahj, you know, off the court, I'm always here for him. I've been through some of the same stuff he's been through. Just reminding him to not take all of this for granted, helping him realize that everything he does goes under the microscope. I'm here to help him mature. You know, at the D-I level, whether it's Big East, MEAC or what not, you have to grow up quickly. On the court, he has it all, he's a unique talent. He can beat anybody he wants to. It's just how he puts it all together off the court."

Since returning from the suspension, Tate is averaging roughly 17ppg, and his energy and effort has increased tremendously, as evidence by his two late steals against Coppin State. One of which, led to an emphatic dunk which ignited the Hornet's 12-point comeback.

"Any time he get's one of them big plays. Points just start to pile up. It's just exciting. he's just so exciting to play with." Say Threatt, snapping his fingers to indicate just how fast Tate can rack up buckets.

Talking to Threatt and watching him play, you can just see it in his eyes. You can see it in his body language, the way he uses his hands to demonstrate and direct. He loves this game. He loves this sport. When he's not directing the offense or shutting down the opponent's best player, he's coaching at camps, and teaching the game to the next generation.

"Oh, I love it. I really love it. When the ball stops bouncing, that's definitely one thing I want to look into, something I want to dip my feet in to. I really like coaching"

But the ball hasn't stopped bouncing for Threatt just yet.

"I'm trying to keep this thing going, seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven, on to the tournament. This is what I envisioned at the begining of the season. These young guys are maturing, and we're peaking at the right time."

Could Threatt be playing at the BCS-conference level? Absolutely. Just look at his numbers. He's also dealt with adversity, battled through hardships, and walked away victorious, which is bigger than any statistic, winning streak or game-winning assist.

"I'm having so much fun. I love college. This is how I envisioned it way back. It's a dream come true. I just have to thank god for giving me the opportunity."

An oppurtunity that he's making the most of.

#POSTERIZED: The D-II Destroyer

A few weeks back, we showed you video of a D-II player destroying a basketball stanchion.

That player, Cal State-San Bernardino forward Kwame Alexander, was at it again.

Well, he didn't break another stanchion. But he did jump over a player from damn-near the foul line.

This is just incredible.



Holy crap. Holy crap. Holy crap.

There has to be a D-I program out there that can give this kid a scholarship.

POSTERIZED: Weekend Recap

This is the third week of the B.I.A.H #POSTERIZED Weekend Recap, and I think we might be on to something here. Surprisingly enough, capturing a #POSTERIZED entry is more time-consuming than you might think, so for all the borderline-#POSTERIZED dunks, a post like this makes perfect sense.

Ali Langford, Niagara vs. Rider, 2/11

This isn't a fantastic dunk, in fact, it's nothing more than ordinary. But it was a game-winner. Who doesn't love a game-winning dunk?





Steve Moore, Missouri vs. Baylor, 2/11

I love me some "Big Steve". The Missouri big-man has played a huge role for the Tigers this season, and has helped to fill up the front court in the absence of Laurence Bowers. In the Tiger's dominant win over Baylor this weekend, "Big Steve" got vertical in a huge way, flying through the lane for an emphatic dunk. The crowd reaction is awesome.





Markel Brown, Oklahoma State vs. Kansas, 2/11

Brown has been a one-man #POSTERIZED army in 2012. He has taken over for Alabama's Tony Mitchell as "Dunker of the Year" and with good reason. This is just an amazing dunk. The pass is fantastic, but the catch-and-release is phenomenal. Oklahoma State might not be all that great, but every game featuring the 'Pokes is becoming "Must-Se TV" because of Brown's dunkabillity.





Stuart Lagerson, UT-Arlington vs. Texas State, 2/11

The Mavericks of UTA are undefeated in the Southland Conference and are on a 15-game win streak. Their 20-point win over Texas State this weekend was capped off by a nasty #POSTERIZED jam by seldom-used seven-footer Stuart Lagerson. It was only his 11th field goal of the season, but it will probably go down as being the best of the year.





Steven Roundtree, Oral Roberts vs. Western Illinois, 2/11

The 2011 Summit League "Newcomer of the Year" has been a integral part of the Golden Eagles success this season. Oral Roberts is on the cusp of a Summit League regular season championship and a favorite to win the conference tournament. They are also a legitimate bubble contender. The sophomore forward is averaging just over 10ppg and has the athletic ability to clean up any miss.

Shane Southwell, Kansas State vs. Texas, 2/11

Kansas State needed to beat Texas over the weekend to stay in contention for an at-large bid. Unfortunately they didn't get it, losing 75-65. They are now 6-6 in the Big-XII and have lost three of their last five. But the did get a mighty poster-dunk from Shane Southwell, so they can take solace in that, right?





Arnett Moultrie, Mississippi State vs. Ole Miss, 2/9

OK, this one is from Thursday, but ESPN has made a real mess of things by starting their branded "weeks" by starting them on Saturdays and ending on Mondays. What type of week is that? Regardless, this dunk needs recognition. look where Dee Bost throws it from. Sure, the Markel Brown dunk is better, but this one ain't too shabby either.

Since we're already discussing crazy alley-oops that took place last week, we might as well mention this little dandy. All I know is that if you miss a pass like this, you're probably gonna end up on the bench for a long time. But if you're successful, well, you get the dap you deserve.

Monday Morning Dump

- Creighton got shellacked by Wichita State on Saturday 89-68, as evident by this clip of Doug McDermott getting "a stern talking-to" from his father. The Bluejays have now lost three in-a-row

- A lot of bizarre/random news from the SDSU/UNLV showdown on Saturday, which was arguably the best game of the weekend - Flava Flav was in the UNLV student section? I don't even want to know how he got there. SDSU students got punk'd? UNLV students make giant carboard cut-outs. Mike Moser makes epic "Scheyer-faces"

- Jeff Eisenberg provides a stock report from this weekend's worth of action

- Ryan Fagan explains why any team that wants to beat Kentucky must be mentally-tough. As usual, Myron Medcalf is spot-on

- Speaking of Kentucky, Big Blue Nation invaded Vanderbilt for ESPN Gameday, and Digger Phelps went all "elementary school principal" on them. (RANT-ALERT) Listen, "Digger": Game-invasions are one of the reasons why college hoops is so unique. There was no foul-play involved. There was no vandalism or couch-burning.  If Kentucky fans want to drive 3-hours to Nashville in order to show their school spirit on the campus of a conference foe, let them do it. If anybody should scold BBN, it should have been somebody from Vanderbilt. Hell, maybe the Vanderbilt fans should have done something. But for a schtick-heavy talking-head to scold opposing fans is just lame and unnecessary. I know this might sound terrible, but I'd almost prefer Jimmy Dykes over Digger at this point....

- Based on the amount of talent he has accumulated over the past few years, yes, Ben Howland should have won a title by now. But then again, it's not like UCLA didn't make it to a couple of Final Fours

- The future is very uncertain for Illinois head coach Bruce Weber

- Shannon Russell tries to figure out just what is wrong with Xavier

- Baylor has only three losses of the season, but all three were lopsided losses to elite teams. Are the Bears' Final-4 aspirations down the tubes?

- If you are one of those people who care a great deal about Memphis' move to the Big East, here are some details about the contract

- Speaking of Memphis, it's entirely possible that the rivalry with Tennessee ends due to conference realignment

- Jordan Burgason, Lipscomb's leading scorer and one of the top 3-point shooters in the country, has been dismissed from the school for violating university rules. Burgason was also suspended for the first five games of the season for unspecified disciplinary reasons. Now I remember why I hate Bleacher Report

- A great-read from john Infante on the proposed $2,000 stipend for student-athletes

- If only the Middle Tennesse v. Arkansas-Little Rock game had been more lopsided, we ,might have been privy to the "feel good story of the weekend"

- The rivalry between VCU and ODU is one that should be recognized by more people, but isn't. Unfortunately, not much will change this season, thanks to a lengthy scoring drought by Old Dominion during Saturday's game

- Penn head coach Jerome Allen had some rather interesting quotes during the post-game press conference following the Quaker 58-55 win over Dartmouth

- Run The Floor believes in ten things this season

- Terrell Stoglin, Maryland's scoring-machine, was kinda pissed following his team's 73-55 loss at Duke, in which he was benched for poor play. Naturally, he went on Twitter in order to vent. What do I make of it? I'd be pissed too. But I probably would have stayed away from Twitter. Then again, I played in D-III, so nobody would have been following me anyways.

- This is probably old news, but Maryland's other superstar guard, Pe'Shon Howard is done for the year following an ACL tear. That's sucks. Just sucks. Howard battled back form a foot injury he sustained in the preseason, and returned right before Christmas. He played in 14 games, so he won't be able to redshirt. Gotta feel for the kid.

- This, like the Stoglin tweet, is a non-event . The quote that is, not Parrish's article. His words are pretty solid

- Thanks to Michigan State's win at Ohio State over the weekend, the Big-Ten race is as muddled as ever

- You know what, I'm totally with the NCAA on this one. Gotta start dropping the hammer on major violators

- ESPN is once again trying to create their own statistical rating system. They had the QBR for quarterback ratings, and now have unleashed the BPI, which is their version of the RPI

- Nevin Shapiro, everybody's favorite incarcerated Miami booster, plans to reveal information that will take the school "Down to Chinatown". Hey Nevin, the 1980's called, they want their phrase back.

#COSTUMIZED: Utah State fan "Wild" Bill Sproat is back

You've seen him before.

He's the larger-than-life Utah State fan who made the media rounds for his free-throw distracting costumes. He's been Peter Pan, Cupid, Winnie the Pooh, a mermaid and even a hula-dancer. He's been on ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU and probably even ESPN3, 4 and 5. He's essentially the most super of super-fans.

And a great dude all around.

But like any young-adult, there comes a time when you have to put away the kiddie-toys. Bill graduated in 2011, and since then he's yet to get creative for a home game. He's still ever-present at Aggie home games in his customized #22 "Wild Bill" jersey, but has given up the lost-art of free-throw distraction.

POSTERIZED: "I Believe that he will dunk!"

I've said it once, and I'll say it again: Kyisean Reed is the best "two-footed" dunker in the country. He's the 2011-2012 version of John "The Masked Dunker" "Jet" Williams.

Sure, there are guys who get more hangtime leaping off of one foot, but when it comes to pure "springs", there is not a player in the country more "springy" than the Utah State forward.

Don't believe me?

Just watch what he did to some poor bloke for Louisiana Tech last night:



If we were to ask Jon Rothstein about this, he would say "So much John Williams in Kyisean Reed". And you know what? For once, he'd actually be spot on.

During our #BIAHRoadTrip, we got a chance to visit Utah State and talk with Reed, and former standout JuCo forward. We learned that aside from being a freakish athlete, he's also a really good dude.

See, it's one thing to posterize a defender in space. It's easy to get a lot of hang-time on a fast-break, alley-oop and one-on-one.

But when somebody gets #POSTERIZED down low in the paint, it's just down-right impressive.

Previewing your College Hoops Weekend

Game of the Weekend: Sat. 4:00 pm: No. 14 San Diego State @ No. 16 UNLV:

By now you should all know what happened the last time these two teams got together. Playing on a bum ankle, SDSU's Jamaal Franklin had 22 points and 10 boards, including a tough, driving layup with just 0.3 seconds left on the clock as the Aztecs knocked off league favorite UNLV in Viejas Arena. That was the win that catapulted the Aztecs into the national consciousness and, frankly, to their spot at the top of the MWC standings.

But if you know anything about college basketball, you know that the Rebels are itching to get their shot at redemption in the Thomas and Mack Center on Saturday. UNLV is a different team playing in their own arena, which is a scary proposition considering that the Rebels are already considered arguably the most dangerous team on the west coast. With the taste of a last-second defeat still lingering on their palate and possibly their last shot to keep themselves within reach of a Mountain West regular season title on the line, you better believe that Dave Rice's club is going to be ready to play.

- Villanova's Maalik Wayns has been listed as "day-to-day" due to a sprained-ACL he suffered on Tuesday against Providence. But it's unlikely that he returns in time for Saturday's game against South Florida

- Louisville forward Wayne Blackshear has been cleared to play. The freshman has been out since the early fall due to a torn right labrum
