College Hoops BlogPoll Week Five

Here is my Week 5 BlogPoll ballot. You will notice some pretty hefty swings with some of these teams (i.e. LSU going from #11 in the country to unranked) and there is a good reason for that. Outside of the top 10-12 teams, I have absolutely no faith in anyone. A team like Missouri or Florida State should not be ranked in the top 15, but who am I going to slide up in front of them?

Clemson?

They were swept by the 'Noles this year.

Xavier?

They looked underwhelming this year is a mediocre Atlantic 10.

Gonzaga?

Please.

That has been the hardest part about doing this poll week in and week out. It isn't working through the top of the poll, because there really isn't all that much discussion to be had at the top. Pitt has to be ranked #1 right now. Louisville and UNC have to be #2 and #3 as they won the two toughest conferences in the game. I gave UNC the advantage for a more impressive non-conference season. UConn, Oklahoma, and Memphis have to be the next three teams in your ranking, in whichever order you decide to put them in. So on and so forth.

Going through those teams is much easier than trying to decide who, out of a group of about 30 or so teams that are all so similar, deserves to be ranked in the top 15 and who doesn't deserve to be ranked at all.

Some quick notes on my thought process. Pitt has to be #1. They are the only one of the top four that won didn't lose this week, and they knocked off former #1 UConn in the process. I put Oklahoma at #2 because their lss coincided with Blake Griffin's concussion. With UConn and UNC, despite the issues that are obvious for the Huskies, UNC's performance worried me a lot more. No one other than Lawson was effective in the second half or OT, they finished with five assists on the game as a team, and they gave up a 16 point second half lead to an inferior opponent. But more than anything (including Hansbrough's disappearance this year) I am turned off by the fact they cannot stop a good scoring guard - see Tyrese Rice, Jeff Teague, and now Greivis Vazquez.

The rest is fairly straight forward - a bit down on Big Ten teams this week and a bit high on Big XII teams.
