The Emery Board: Week 4

College basketball has not seen a team go undefeated since Bobby Knight's Indiana Hoosiers went 32-0 in 1975-1976. The closest we have seen since then was a Jameer Nelson-led St. Joseph's team that went 27-0 in the 2003-2004 season before losing to Xavier in the Atlantic-10 tournament. Every season a team flirts with the notion of an undefeated season, but every season that notion slowly fades as January turns to February and February turns to March. BYU's senior guard Jackson Emery, has made the bold prediction that his team, a Cougar squad that finished with a 27-4 record last season, will in fact go undefeated this season.

We have decided that, in honor of Emery's swagger, we will keep a watch on the BYU Cougar's schedule, see if they can walk-the-walk. We will also keep tabs on any other undefeated teams who try to make a run at the perfect season.

Week 4:

BYU had a relatively easy week. The traveled to Omaha to take on Creighton on Wednesday. The Bluejays were able to rein in Jimmer Fredette and Emery (13 points apiece), but Brandon Davies went off for 24 points, including 16 in the final ten minutes of the game. Creighton made a run in the second half of the game to tie it up at 51, but BYU immediately responded with a 10-0 run to put the game back out of reach.

On Saturday, it was on to Hawaii. The Cougars jumped out to a big lead in the first half, and despite another average night from Fredette, BYU cruised to a 21 point win. Stephen Rogers and Logan Magnusson combined for 24 points off the bench.

Next Game: 12/8 vs. Vermont

Next Potential Loss: 12/11 vs. Arizona

Other Undefeated Teams

I'd like to point out that "next potential loss" means the opponent on the schedule closest in date to now with the most realistic chance of defeating the unbeaten team. There may be games in between "next game" and "next potential loss" and while it is quite possible a loss would occur during this time, I wouldn't bet on it. Or maybe I would.....

The Bottom of the Barrel:

It would be rude of us to include the "have's" and but not the "have-not's". After all, planetary balance is very essential. For every team that hasn't lost a game, there has to be a team still fighting for their first win.

IS THIS A JOKE?

What kind of ridiculous post is this?

Last time I checked the Cats are on a roll, to completely look past them would be a huge mistake.

You need to check your sources.

Rob - I hope you had nothing to do with this...

Impressive Trolling! Nice way to phrase your comment to get a response.

The Vermont CATamounts are 6-1. He didn't mean the Arizona WildCATs.

I just wrote a post about all of the undefeated teams just today... I think BYU is a fine basketball team, but not a chance in the world they go undefeated (which is not what you're trying to argue, just saying)... the Mountain West is loaded this year at the top... should be an extremely fun conference race to watch.

Agreed Jon, going to be really hard for BYU to go undefeated when they lose to the University of Vermont Catamounts tomorrow
