Tuesday's Shootaround: Mason Plumlee and Kemba Walker shine

CBE Classic

No. 1 Duke 82, Marquette 77: Read here.

No. 4 Kansas State 81, No. 18 Gonzaga 64: Kansas State came out and really took it to the Zags. The tougher Wildcats beat up the Zags in the paint and on the defensive end of the floor. Gonzaga doesn't have a point guard. They don't have anyone that can facilitate their offensive. Mark Few was forced to go with David Stockton (John's son, no where near as good) last night. It worked for stretches. The story of the game was Kansas State's three point shooting (they were an impressive 12-26), which helped offset their 22 turnovers, and their defense, which held Gonzaga to just 33% shooting. There is too much talent on that Zags roster to struggle this much, but after seeing them get beat up by both SDSU and K-State, I think the cap has been put on their season. They'll be dancing come March, but for how long?

Maui Invitational

UConn 83, Wichita State 79: Kemba Walker, yessir!

No. 9 Kentucky 76, Oklahoma 64: Terrence Jones proved to be a beast, going for 29 points, 13 boards, 4 blocks, 3 assists, and 2 steals. But the rest of the Kentucky freshman, save for a quick ten point burst from Doron Lamb early in the first half, looked thoroughly mediocre in their first TV performance. That will change, but there were some concerns against the Sooners, who looked quite resilient and matched the Wildcats every effort despite being completely outmatched talent wise. Kentucky missed free throws late and had too many terrible offensive possessions. But, like I said, that should work itself out as these kids get more experience playing together.

No. 2 Michigan State 82, Chaminade 74: Yes, that score is correct. The Silver Swords were up by as much as eight in this one, and at one point had a five point second half lead. Kalin Lucas had 28 points, while Chaminade his 10 threes to keep it close and (get this) outrebounded the Spartans.

No. 11 Washington 106, UVa 63: Washington looked awesome last night. Just terrific. They defended as well as I have ever seen them, they got out and ran in transition, and they took good shots. It also helps when you go 17-26 from three.

Paradise Jam

Old Dominion 67, Xavier 58: Xavier just does not have enough offensive firepower right now. Take away Tu Holloway, and this team is going to struggle to score points. That is exactly what the bigger, stronger, and more athletic Monarchs did tonight. Holloway had been averaging 27 ppg coming in, but he finished with just 14 on 3-10 shooting with 6 turnovers. Frank Hassell was the difference on the offensive end for ODU as he was unstoppable in the post, finishing with 16 points, 8 boards, and a number of big baskets down the stretch to win the Paradise Jam title.

Clemson 64, Seton Hall 58 OT: The good news is that the Pirates are really defending well right now. The bad news is that until Jeremy Hazell gets back from his broken wrist and Herb Pope is able to get back into game shape, they will really struggle to score. Clemson shot just 29.3% from the field, but it was the 20 turnovers they forced that ended up being the difference.

St. Peter's 50, Alabama 49: The Crimson Tide lost to St. Peter's. They only scored 49 points. St. Peter's was missing their best player Wesley Jenkins. Alabama went 0-3 in the Paradise Jam. Pathetic.

Long Beach State 78, Iowa 72

Other Notable Games

Baylor 72, Lipscomb 60: LaceDarius Dunn had 24 in his return from suspension, while Quincy Acy continued his excellent play with 18 and 14 against a very good big man in Adnan Hodzic.

Winthrop 83, Wake Forest 74: If their start wasn't bad enough, Melvin Tabb has left the team. Yuck.

UMass 67, TCU 48: Don't look now, but the Minutemen are 4-0.

  • Louisville 106, Chattanooga 65
  • Cincinnati 76, FAMU 51
  • Dayton 61, Savannah State 59
  • Notre Dame 97, Maine 72
  • Mississippi State 82, Detroit 76
