Josh Selby is still waiting to hear from the NCAA in regards to his eligibility as a college basketbal player, but starting today, Selby officially begins his career as a college student.
According to the Lawrence Journal-World, the NCAA has allowed Selby to attend class for the first 13 days of the semester -- on scholarship -- while they continue to delve into his eligibility. Selby, who attended three different high schools, is under investigation for his relationship with Robert Frazier, commonly known as "Bay", who is Carmelo Anthony's business manager. Frazier admitted that he was an advisor to Selby during the recruiting process, which in and of itself would -- well, should -- not be a problem. The recruiting process is not an easy one to work your way through, and so long as no money or promises were exchanged, Selby getting advice from a Baltimore native is not a violation.
Complicating that issue, however, was a New York Times article where the reporter saw Selby driving a white Mercedes Benz.
Last season, two high-profile recruits went through a similar process. Renardo Sidney was not cleared all season, and still will not be allowed to play until December of this year for benefits he received in high school. A much more similar case to Selby's was that of John Wall, who was not cleared until October 30th last year. He was suspended two games for taking about $800 of benefits from his AAU coach.
