First, it was freshmen Johnnie Lacey and James Still, who beat up a fellow student seemingly at random. They weren't just kicked off the team, they got the boot from school.
Next was Greedy Peterson, PC's leading scorer and rebounder, an athletic 6'6" wing that was always a 20-10 threat. He was dismissed from the team for the dreaded "violation of team rules", and has since attempted to pursue a career overseas.
More recently in the news, Joseph Young has been dealing with issues regarding the LOI he signed with Providence. He doesn't want to go to Providence anymore, in part due to an ailing aunt and, in all likelihood, in part because his father was rehired at Houston, and Providence won't release him.
As if all of that drama wasn't enough, Kadeem Batts, a redshirt freshman with the Friars, was arrested early Sunday morning for failure to disperse and disorderly conduct. Apparently, he was outside of a club after it closed, and didn't move away quick enough when cops told him too.
Providence has already hired two additional members of their staff, and also implemented a curfew and a strict no bar and no club rule. Still, this sort of behavior by the players is not becoming of the school.
Keno Davis has just three years of head coaching experience. Some might question whether he was ready to take the reins of a Big East program when PC hired him after a single season at Drake.
But so far, Davis is handling things the right way. Kids that violate the rules are getting the boot. Eventually, players that join the Friars are going to learn that they need to behave, or find a new school. Providence will likely have a tough season in 2011, but Davis is laying the groundwork for a disciplined program.
Now he just needs to improve the quality of the athlete, both on and off the court, that he can recruit.
