Last week, we talked about potential changes to the SEC and/or the SEC Tournament.
If you remember, last season the SEC East went 27-9 against the SEC West. Five of those nine wins came against Eastern bottom dweller Georgia. The SEC East sent four teams -- Kentucky, Vanderbilt, Tennessee, and Florida -- to the NCAA Tournament, while the West sent zero.
This sparked discussion that the SEC could change the format of their conference by eliminating the divisions, or at the very least seed their conference tournament 1-12. Right now, the SEC gives the top two seeds from each division a bye, meaning that Ole Miss and Mississippi State, NIT teams, got byes this year while Tennessee, and Elite 8 team, and Florida, a tournament team, were forced to win a first round game.
Unfair, right?
There was hope that the format could change, but unfortunately SEC coaches and administrators were unable to come to a consensus, which means that next year the SEC will have the exact same format.
The SEC is the only major conference that still uses divisions (there are a handful of mid- and low-majors that use divisions as well). I don't believe they need to get rid of the divisions, they need to do away with their tournament format.
Its ludicrous that the league doesn't want to reward their best teams.
