Thursday's Shootaround: Pitt wins their third straight on the road, Clemson rolls against UNC

Pitt 67, UConn 57: The Panthers were supposed to be rebuilding this season, but the just may be the best team in the Big East. After holding off a UConn comeback in Hartford last night, the Panthers are now 14-2 on the season, have won seven straight games overall, sit atop the Big East with a 4-0 record, and have won three straight road games in the league - at Syracuse, Cincinnati, and now UConn.

Pitt jumped out to an early 18-8 lead, but the Huskies would chip away, heading into the half down just three (although, it could have been closer; freshman Alex Oriakhi tried to get a bit too fancy on a dunk, and as a result it came after the buzzer). Pitt would once again start the second half strong, going up by 10 early, but UConn made their one and only run of the game, scoring 11 straight points as a Jerome Dyson layup gave them the lead. The two teams traded baskets for a couple possessions, but Ashton Gibbs, who had hit a number of big shots throughout the game, drilled a three in the corner to open a 55-51 lead and hit a nifty reverse layup 20 seconds later, and Pitt was never threatened again. Gibbs and Brad Wanamaker both had 19 point for the Panthers.

Clemson 83, UNC 64: You know what you are going to get when you face Clemson, but UNC's young back court was still not prepared for their pressure as the Tigers jumped out to a 7-0 off the bat and never looked back. They forced 26 turnovers by the Tar Heels, took their bigs completely out of the game (Ed Davis and Deon Thompson finished with a combined 8 points on 4-15 shooting), and simply looked like the only team in Littlejohn Coliseum that was ready to play. Dexter Strickland, who finished with 17 points on 7-8 shooting, was the only Tar Heels to finish in double figures, and was also the only Tar Heel that wasn't afraid to attack the Clemson press. Trevor Booker had 21 points, 9 boards, 4 assists, and a couple of dunks that could have been classified as felonious assault on the rim.

Wisconsin 60, Northwestern 50: I think it is finally safe to say that Northwestern has no shot at making the tournament. If you are an NCAA Tournament team, you beat good teams at home, especially when those teams are missing one of their best players (Jon Leuer is out with a broken wrist). For the first 35 minutes of this one, Wisconsin may as well have been playing without Trevon Hughes as well, as he was 0-10 from the floor with just 2 points. But Hughes finally broke through, hitting a big three to tie the game at 42 with just under seven minutes left. Two minutes later, he layup sparked a personal 11-3 run, where Hughes drilled threes on three straight possessions, as the Badgers hung on to beat Northwestern.

Michigan State 60, Minnesota 53: Durrell Summers sparked a 13-4 run to close the first half as the Spartans built a lead that Minnesota would never recover from. Down by 11 early in the second half, Lawrence Westbrook and Damian Johnson would score 20 straight points for the Gophers to cut the lead to 51-49, and after getting a stop, Westbrook missed a three that would have given them the lead and Chris Allen answered with a three of his own, opening up a five point lead for the Spartans.

The Big XII can win on the road

  • Texas 90, Iowa State 83: The Longhorns took a shot from Iowa State in the first half. The Cyclones used a hot start from three to head into the break up 44-42, but in the second half Avery Bradley took over. The freshman scored 16 of his 24 points, and a 14-2 run to start the half opened up a 56-46 lead that Texas never relinquished. Bradley was 10-14 from the floor (over his last two games, he is averaging 26.5 ppg while shooting 22-28 from the field and 7-7 from three) and finished with 6 boards, 6 assists, and 3 steals. Damion James had 23 points and 14 boards to become the Big XII's all-time leading rebounder.

  • Kansas 84, Nebraska 72: The Huskers came out on fire in this one, jumping to a 12-1 lead and hanging tough with the Jayhawks for 30 minutes. But when the shots started missing, Nebraska had no answers on the defensive end. They allowed Kansas to get any shot it wanted all night, finishing 58% from the field and 13-21 from long range. Sherron Collins led the way with 22 points for Kansas.

  • Missouri 94, Texas Tech 89 OT: With under 30 seconds left and Mizzou up 79-77, freshman guard Michael Dixon tried to throw a pass the length of the court, but it was picked off by Mike Singletary, who found John Roberson. Roberson drew a foul, hit both free throws, and forced OT for the Red Raiders. But Tech would have their own choke artist. Nick Okorie, fouled with Tech down just 90-89 and 20 seconds left, missed two free throws. After Marcus Denmon hit two and Singletary missed a three, Dixon redeemed himself, sealing the win with two more free throws. Kim English finished with 20 and 10 for the Tigers, while Roberson had 25 points and 5 assists. Tech's Brad Reese and Denmon both had 20 points off the bench.
