Did you know Sacred Heart had the comeback of the year last night?

When I go through box scores each and every morning, I make it a point to give a look at every game decided by just one possession on the off-chance that the game was decided by a buzzer-beater. So when I came upon a 56-55 final in the Sacred Heart-Hartford game on Wednesday night, I gave it a look.

The lede to the AP's recap said this:

Jerrell Thompson had five points and a steal in the last 38 seconds as Sacred Heart rallied for a 56-55 win over Hartford on Wednesday night.
So I kept it moving.

Nothing to see here.

Oh, if I had only read on one more paragraph, I would have seen this:
The Pioneers (2-7) trailed 51-31 with 8:17 left
Wait ... what?!?

You read that right. Sacred Heart was down 20 points with just over eight minutes left in the game and came back to win. Hartford isn't exactly Duke, but when you make up a deficit that is almost two-thirds of the number of points that you have with 8:17 left in the game, that is an accomplishment.

So how did Sacred Heart do it?

Well, for starters, they kept Hartford from scoring, as the Hawks managed just four points over the last eight minutes. Then Sacred Heart started attacking the basket. The Pioneers only managed five field goals in their game-winning, 25-4 run, but they hit 13-16 from the charity stripe.

After that, it was all Jerrell Thompson. He hit two free throws with 1:41 left to cut the lead to 52-50. After a three-point play from Hartford's Clayton Brothers, Thompson hit a mid-range jumper with 38 seconds left to made it 55-52. After Brothers missed a free throw, Thompson tied the game with 24 seconds left.

On Hartford's final possession, Thompson stole the ball from Joe Zeglinski with three seconds left. He hit ahead to Stan Dulaire, who was streaking to the basket at the other end. Brothers intentionally fouled Dulaire with 0.2 seconds left on the clock, and Dulaire hit one of this two free throws to give Sacred Heart the win and their only lead of the game.

"I've been coaching a long time and I'm not sure I've ever had a game where I never led until the last two-tenths of a second and still won," Sacred Heart head coach Dave Bike told The Dagger. "We'd been trailing the whole game. To finally go ahead in the last two-tenths of a second is nice."

You know how they say "it ain't over til its over"?

Its true.
