Conference Tournament Madness: A Review

This is the comprehensive 2009 Conference Tournament Scoreboard. Every result of tournament action is listed below. This list is extremely useful for March Madness tournament help. You can see how well teams played in their conference tournaments and if they are streaking or if they are fading fast.

The teams listed in Blue won their conference tournaments and receive automatic bids to the 2009 NCAA men's basketball tournament. The teams listed in Black recieved at-large bids.

News & Notes:

  • No teams played more than 4 games in the conference tournaments. Duquesne, Syracuse, Baylor, and South Alabama played four games, and all four teams lost in their tournament finals.
  • Cleveland State, Akron, Mississippi State were the only teams to play and win in all four rounds of their respective conference tournaments.
  • The lowest seed to win a conference tournament was #6 Southern California. They beat #3 Cal, #2 UCLA, and #4 Arizona State en route to their first PAC-10 title.
  • The lowest seed to make a conference tournament final was Baylor, who was seeded #9 in the Big 12.
  • Syracuse logged 195 minutes (three hours and 15 minutes) of total basketball over the four-day span at the Big East Tournament. Jonny Flynn played all but 14 of those minutes.
  • Of the 29 conference champions, there were 17 #1 seeds, three #2 seeds, five #3 seeds, one number #5 seed, and one #6 seed.
  • Cleveland State, Temple, USC, and Mississippi State were the biggest "bubble busters", as they stole bids to the big dance that they would not have received at all if they had not won their respective tournaments.
  • Cleveland State beat #1 Butler, who will still be dancing, Xavier was knocked off by Temple, but will still be in the dance, USC beat 3 at -large teams en route to the Pac-10 title, and Mississippi State avoided an end to their season by beating Tennessee and stealing a bid from the SEC.
  • Clemson and Texas A&M were the only teams to lose in the first round of their conference tournaments AND still get an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament.

ALL-CHAMPIONSHIP WEEK-TEAM

Jonny Flynn, Syracuse: No need for me to explain this pick. I'm pretty sure Flynn never left the court once the entire week. He probably just brought a sleeping bag and slept on the hardwood between sessions. He becomes the 4th Big East Tournament MVP to come from the losing team. For the week, Flynn averaged 19.8 ppg, 9.3 apg, and 2.3 spg.

Toney Douglas, Florida State: If FSU had beaten Duke in the ACC finals, he would have been ACC tournament MVP. But they lost, so it went to Jon Scheyer. But Douglas came to play every game this week, racking up games of 25, 27 and 28 while shooting over 58% from the floor.

Cedric Jackson, Cleveland State: Jackson, Cleveland State's point, did not put up overwhelming numbers this week, but he led the Vikings to the dance, knocking off Butler along the way. For the week, he averaged 15.5 ppg, 7.3 rpg, 5.3 apg, and 2.8 spg. If you cant remember anything about Cleveland State or Cedric Jackson, lets go back in time to 12/15/08.

DeMar DeRozan, USC: DeRozan had a decent freshman year, but nothing compared to the hype he came in with. But he played like a senior fighting to keep his college career alive during the USC's run to a tournament bid. He went off in the PAC-10 tourney, leading the Trojans to their first championship. In the first two rounds, he had back-to-back double-doubles, then dropped 25 on ASU in the finals. When all was said and done, he finished with averages of 21 ppg and 9.0 rpg.

Artsiom Parakhouski, Radford: This near 7-foot tall Belarusian beast led Radford to their first Big South title in 11 years. During the regular season he averaged 16 points, 11 rebounds and 2 blocks. During the three game tournament, he averaged 19.7 ppg, 13.7 rpg (6.3 off), and 4.0 bpg. In the finals, he posted 26 and 18.
