While the happenings on court were quite exciting over the weekend, quite a bit happened off-the-court. A couple of roster notes you may have missed:
Chris Singleton: The Florida State star fractured his right foot in the first half of the Seminoles 63-56 win over Virginia on Saturday. He was scheduled to have surgery today in the hopes that he will be able to return to the lineup by the end of the season.
What kind of effect will this have on Florida State's tournament chances?
Well, it may have a lot. There are still five regular season games left as well as the conference tournament. Florida State is in right now, but probably not secure enough that they can lose six straight without Singleton in the lineup. The good news is that the Seminoles should (I emphasize should because this is the same FSU team that lost to Auburn with Singleton) three of their last five -- at Wake Forest, home for Miami, at NC State -- without Singleton. If they can pull off a win at Maryland or against UNC at home, that would be gravy. 11-5 in the ACC with Singleton back for the NCAA Tournament should be enough to get them in.
The problem, however, is that Singleton is the Seminoles leading scorer, and its no secret that FSU has had their struggles offensively. He's also their best defender. Expect the Seminoles to win ugly (uglier?) with him out.
Thomas Robinson: Robinson will miss the next two weeks after undergoing minor surgery on a meniscus tear he suffered against Missouri last Monday. This kid has been through enough this year. Luckily the injury isn't to severe. The good news? Jeff Withey played well in Robinson's place on Saturday, scoring eight points in nine minutes.
Josh Selby is still out for the Jayhawks as well.
Fab Melo: The disappointing Syracuse freshman was held out of Saturday's game against Louisville after missing practice on Thursday or Friday. Jim Boeheim didn't get into details other than to say that he is done playing "for now", but Melo told Mike Waters that he has had family problems, that his head wasn't in it to practice, and that he didn't tell the Syracuse coaches he would be missing practice. Missing practice for family reasons is one thing, not telling the coaching staff, however, is a problem.
Cameron Moore: The UAB forward broke his hand in practice on Friday and is out indefinitely. Its a huge loss for the Blazers, who had a shot at winning Conference USA. Moore was averaging 15.6 ppg and 9.8 rpg.
Gerard Coleman: A tumultuous year for the Friars got worse when Jeff Goodman broke the news that Coleman, a freshman averaging 10.4 ppg, may be done for the year due to academic issues.
Keon Lawrence and Jamel Jackson: Lawrence and Jackson were kicked off the Seton Hall team for what was termed "a violation of team rules and an ongoing pattern of conduct unbecoming of a representative of Seton Hall athletics."
