Tournament News and Notes:
- 16 #1-seeds won their conference tournaments, while five #2-seeds, four #3-seeds and two #4-seeds won.
- A #5-seed (East Tennessee State), a #7-seed (Houston), and a #9-seed (Ohio) all won conference tournaments.
- No #6-seeds or #8-seeds won conference tournaments, although two #6-seeds (Mercer and Minnesota) and an #8-seed (Georgetown) made it to a conference finals.
- Only five teams played four games during one conference tournament. #7-seed Georgia Tech (3-1) lost in the ACC finals; #8-seed Georgetown (3-1) lost in the Big East finals; and #6-seed Minnesota (3-1) lost in the Big-10 finals.
- #7-seed Houston won all four games en route to the Conference-USA title, and #9-seed Ohio won all four games as well, to win the MAC title.
- Five teams lost championship games played on their home court - Mercer (Atlantic Sun), Coastal Carolina (Big South), Weber State (Big Sky), UNLV (Mountain West) and Quinnipiac (Northeast)
All-Tournament-Team
G - Armon Bassett - Ohio - The former Indiana Hoosier and UAB Blazer led the #9-seeded Ohio Bobcats to their first MAC championship in six years. Bassett entered the tournament averaging roughly 17 ppg. A week later and Bassett's tournament average was up 12 points, to 29 ppg. Ohio was the lowest seed in a one-bid league at the beginning of the week, but at at the end of the week, they were the only MAC team with dancing shoes, and it's largely because of Bassett's stellar play.
G - Anthony Johnson - Montana - He scored 42 points, including 34 second-half points and the final 21, to bring his team back from 20 down, on their opponent's home-court in the league championship game. Yeah I'd say that single performance warrants him a spot on this list. Thanks to Johnson's absurd second half in the Big Sky conference finals, his senior season continues, as the #4-seeded Grizzlies get to go dancing.
G - Evan Turner - Ohio State - He's a lock for National Player of the year, and he did this. That's probably enough to make this list, but it doesn't end there. He was four assists shy of a triple-double in the Buckeyes' double-OT win over Illinois in the semifinals, logging 31 points, 10 boards, and 6 dimes. He scored 11 points in the overtimes, and hit too many big shots to mention. In the finals against an upstart Minnesota squad, Turner put up nearly the same numbers, logging a double double of 31 and 11. I'd say Turner had a pretty good Big-10 tournament.
F - Da'Sean Butler - West Virginia - He hit not one, but two game-winning shots during his stay in New York City. He averaged just under 20 ppg during the Big East tournament but had the two most important buckets of the whole weekend. He was the catalyst in winning the Mountaineer's first Big East Tournament championship.
F - Kevin Thompson - Morgan State - He was the key reason Morgan State was able to bully their way to a MEAC championship and a birth in the NCAA tournament. Over the course of the three-day tournament Thompson averaged 15pts and 11rebs, but most important, got 3 victories and will be able to lace up his dancing shoes
