Busy day in off-the-court college hoops news. Here's a quick recap for you:
- Jim Calhoun will be returning to the sidelines for the Huskies for Saturday's game at the X Center against Cincinnati. He missed seven games as the result of an undisclosed illness, a stretch in which the Huskies went 3-4 under associate coach George Blaney and saw their tournament hopes take a serious blow. Could this be the spark that propels a sputtering Husky team to make a tournament run?
- The NCAA held their mock NCAA Tournament selection today for media members. To get a feel for the process, take a look at the live-blog from day one.
- The McDonald's all-american teams were announced today. UNC leads the way with three members, while Ohio State and Memphis both have two recruits on a roster. Seven of the players are still undecided on where they will go to school. Memphis-commit Will Barton, who is in the top 10 on most recruiting lists, will not play in the game as he is in his post-grad year at Brewster Academy.
- The audit on the Binghamton athletics program is finished, and did they uncover some damning facts. Read this and this, and tell me you dont think this program is finished. Some of the lowlights:
- Walk-on David Fine was kicked off the team after University Police found him in his dorm room with red-glassy eyes and a roach still burning.
- Tiki Mayben, Corey Chandler, Paul Crosby, and DJ Rivera were likely kicked off the team for purchasing goods with a stolen debit card.
- Head coach Kevin Broadus paid for quite a bit for these players: from cell phones, to gas, to court fines, to the tuition for a transfer before he was eligible to get a scholarship.
- The coaches successfully lobbied for grades to be changed, late work to be accepted, and even the possibility of helping the player's cheat on papers downloaded from the internet.
