Monday's Shootaround: Stanley Robinson goes for 29, and Greivis Vasquez looks to be out of his slump

UConn 93, Iona 74: Stanley Robinson scored a career-high 29 points with his two young daughters in attendance as the Huskies finally jumped out to a first half lead against an inferior opponent. More importantly, freshman Jamal Coombs-McDaniel looked like a viable option off the bench, scoring 13 points. I got my first chance to see Ater Majok player for UConn as well. Majok had 2 points, 6 boards, and 3 blocks yesterday. He's clearly going to give the Huskies depth in the paint, but given his slender frame and raw skill set, it may not be as big of a boost as many expected.

Washington 86, San Francisco 71: The Huskies started slowly before opening up a 16 point half time lead, but allowed the Dons to cut that lead to 47-43 midway through the second half. But Washington used a 13-2 run to put away San Francisco. Quincy Pondexter scored 22 points in the win, but Isaiah Thomas, who had just nine points in the win over Texas A&M, struggled again, finishing with only four points.

Maryland 72, Florida Atlantic 59: Greivis Vasquez finally looks like Greivis Vasquez again. After struggling through the first eight games of the season, Vasquez scored 20 for the third straight game, finishing with 26 points, 8 boards, and 5 assists yesterday. Landon Milbourne added 19 for the Terps.

Other notable games:

  • Louisville 79, Radford 53: Samardo Samuels had 18 points and 14 boards to lead the Cardinals, who have now won four straight.
  • Marquette 102, Presbyterian 62: Lazar Hayward scored 23 and Jimmy Butler added as the Golden Eagles cruised.
  • Wisconsin 79, Illinois-Chicago 43: Jon Leuer and Jason Bohannon combined to scored 15 points in a 21-9 run to close the first half which opened up a 35-19 halftime lead.
  • Missouri 94, Austin Peay 79: Kim English scored 23 points and Marcus Denmon added a career-high 17 as the Tigers hit eight threes in the first half to put away Austin Peay.
  • UCLA 66, Delaware State 49: The Bruins got a career-high 21 points from Reeves Nelson as they have now won three of four games heading into conference play.
Sunday's Best:
  • Vernon Teel nearly notched a triple double as he posted 20 points, 10 boards, and 7 assists to help lead Loyola Marymount to a win over Sacramento State.
  • Akron's Jimmy Conyers had 22 points, 5 boards, 4 steals, and shot 10-13 from the floor as the Zips knocked off Valpo.
  • Perhaps more impressive than Samardo Samuels' 18 points and 14 points was the fact that he helped hold Artsiom Parakhouski, who came into the game averaging 21.8 ppg and 13.4 rpg, to just 14 points and 8 boards.
