By now, I'm sure you've heard - Texas guard Varez Ward had an awkward landing during the lay-up lines in last night CBE Classic against Pittsburgh.
Well, he did more than just land funny.
He ruptured his quad and will miss the rest of the season. Surgery is scheduled for Tuesday, and he will be out 6-10 months. According to Gary Parrish (via Twitter), Ward suffered the injury on the jump, not on the landing.
Tough break for Ward, who Texas coaches had been raving about. To be fair, this won't be a huge loss for Texas simply because they are loaded. Varez Ward is a tough, strong guard that excels on the defensive end, but has the ability to play either position offensively. Sound like Justin Mason at all?
Beyond that, J'Covan Brown and Dogus Balbay combined for 22 points, 10 boards, and 10 assists last night, and Rick Barnes can also run talented freshman Avery Bradley and Jordan Hamilton out there.
If there is any team in the country that can absorb a season ending injury, it is the Longhorns.
