UCONN NOT COACH SHOPPING JUST YET: Jim Calhoun has had a rough six months.
It started with a freelance reporter goading Jim Calhoun into an outburst regarding how much he makes at a postgame press conference. Then, the three-time cancer survivor missed the Huskies first NCAA Tournament game back in March. Just six days later, Yahoo! Sports published an article accusing UConn of major recruiting violations. And finally, the 67 year old Calhoun hit a pothole during a bike race and flipped over the handle bars. He broke five ribs, but finished the 50 miles ride before collapsing.
For a guy his age with his health problems, eventually the rigors of coaching have to catch up with him, right?
With a looming NCAA investigation, that is what many people (including yours truly) speculated. Would Calhoun's coaching career be coming to a close? A final four at age 67 would be a great way to ride off into the proverbial sunset, wouldn't it?
Apparently not. Dave Borges of the New Haven Register is reporting that UConn is considering signing Calhoun to a new multi-year deal. Calhoun is currently in the last year of a six year deal that paid him $1.6 million per.
With Urban Meyer and John Calipari signing for a combined 14 years, $56 million, you have to figure that a coach with 700 wins and two national titles that is coming off of a final four appearance will get a raise.
Ken Krayeske be damned, Calhoun would probably still be underpaid.
