Here is a quick recap of yesterday's games that we didn't have a chance to get to:
- Wake Forest 86, Florida State 63: The Demon Deacons bounced back from a loss to NC State with a dominating all-around performance against FSU. Wake held the 'Noles to just 63 points on 38% shooting, using a 13-0 run in the second half to put the game away. Wake Forest shot 49% from the floor, which is made all the more impressive when you realize that Jeff Teague was off all game, finishing just 3-13 from the floor for 15 points. Wake is an interesting case this year. They came into this game losing four of their last six, including losses to ACC cellar dwellars Georgia Tech and NC State. While they are sitting at 6-4 in the league right now, they have beaten all four ranked teams in the conference - Duke, UNC, Clemson, and now Florida State. It seems to be an issue of intensity and not talent. More specifically, will the Demon Deacons come out ready to play against all levels of competition? I believe effort and intensity to be coached, and if Wake Forest is continually coming out flat against lower level competition, I think the blame has to go to Dino Gaudio.
- Pitt 85, Cincinnati 69: The Panthers came out ready to go against a tough Cincinnati team two days before heading to Hartford to take on UConn. Pitt shot 72% in the first half and 67.4% for the game (they missed just eight two point field goals for the game). Is Levance Fields the best point guard in the Big East? There certainly can be an argument made for him. Against Cinci, Fields had 13 assists (he now has six of the seven highest assist totals in a game in the Big East this year - Jonny Flynn's 13 dimes against Georgetown yesterday) and no turnovers. In the five games since Pitt lost to Villanova, Fields has 56 assists (11.2 per) and 6 turnovers. DeJuan Blair finished with 17 and 7, his second-lowest rebounding total of the season.
- Davidson 75, Furman 60: Steph Curry had 25 points, but the story of this game was Curry injurying his ankle. He was helped off the court and didn't return for the final 9:20. Curry is being evaluated today, and as soon as anything pops up, we will let you know. The Wildcats hope to get Curry back for their showdown with Butler next Saturday in Bracketbusters.
- Washington 103, Oregon 84: The Huskies got 21 and 18 from Jon Brockman and Isaiah Thomas added 24 points as Washington moved a game and a half ahead of Arizona State, Cal, and UCLA in the Pac-10 standings. So is U-Dub for real? It looks like it. If they can salvage a split next weekend at the LA schools, the Huskies finish the season with three straight home games.
- Tennessee 79, Vanderbilt 60: Tyler Smith scored 30 points, and Emmanuel Negedu capped an early 14-0 run with a dunk as Tennessee stayed even with Kentucky and South Carolina atop the SEC East.
- South Carolina 75, Alabama 73: Devan Downey scored 18 points, but missed a shot with just a few seconds left on the clock in a tie game. Luckily, Mike Holmes was there tip-in (go to the 6:00 mark).
- Georgia 88, Florida 86: Terrence Woodbury scored a career-high 32 points as the Bulldogs picked up their first SEC win and the Gators dropped a game behind Tennessee, South Carolina, and Kentucky in the SEC East. Nick Calathes did all he could to keep Florida in the game, finishing with 16 points, 13 assists, 9 boards, and 4 steals.
- Kansas 85, Kansas State 74: The Jayhawks got behind by 16 early as Denis Clemente and Jacob Pullen were on fire, but Kansas used a triangle-and-two defense to slow them down, and then went on a 47-21 run over a 16 minute stretch spanning the end of the first half and beginning of the second half. Cole Aldrich had 21 points and Sherron Collins added 19, but freshman Marcus Morris was the best player on the floor for Kansas. He finished the game with 15 points, 7 boards, 4 assists, and 3 steals, and was seemingly involved in just about every play. The loss snapped a six game winning streak for the Wildcats.
- Maryland 83, Virginia Tech 73: Landon Milbourne scored 23 points as Maryland put a damper in Tech's tourney hopes. The Terps never trailed in this game, and after winning three of their last four, are all of a sudden back in the bubble conversation.
- Utah 74, Air Force 59: The Utes won their sixth straight game, opening up a one game lead in the ultra competitive MWC. There are now five teams within two games of first place, and the team in fifth (UNLV) may be the best of the bunch.
- Purdue 49, Iowa 45: E'Twaun Moore scored 16 points and grabbed 10 boards and Keaton Grant hit a big three to give Purdue a 44-41 lead with five minutes left. Robbie Hummel, who had missed the last three games with a fractured back, played 24 minutes and scored two points.
- Xavier 88, Fordham 53: Brad Redford led Xavier with 15 in the blowout.
- LSU 73, Mississippi 66: The Tigers got 22 points from Marcus Thornton as they stayed on top of the SEC West.
- Dayton 69, Richmon 63: The Flyers fot 17 and 10 from Chris Wright and Dayton kept pace with Xavier on top of the A-10 in their first game without Rob Lowery.
- Oregon State 54, Washington State 52: The Beavers went on a 16-0 run to turn an 11 point deficit into a five point lead. Calvin Haynes led OSU with 17 points.
- Providence 78, Rutgers 68: Weyinmi Efejuku led four players in double figures with 25 points and Geoff McDermott added 12 boards and 6 assists as the Friars moved to 8-5 in the Big East.
- BYU 79, TCU 63
- Marquette 73, St. John's 59: Jerel McNeal had 20 points, 7 assists, 7 boards, and 5 steals as Marquette rebounded from a two game losing streak.
- Boise State 66, Utah State 56: The Broncos ended the Aggies 19 game winning streak as they forced 19 USU turnovers and got 20 points from Mark Sanchez.
- Wisconsin 55, Ohio State 50: The Badgers extended their winning streak to four games (after a six game losing streak) as they beat up the Buckeyes inside. Marcus Landry went for 17 and 7 and as a team the Badgers finished with 15 offensive boards. Joe Krabbenhoft game Wisconsin their final lead, hitting a three off of an o-board with two minutes left for a 50-48 lead. Evan Turner scored 23 points, but he had six of the Buckeye's 19 turnovers.
- San Diego State 71, Wyoming 60
- UNLV 89, Colorado State 70
- St. Mary's 77, Portland 65
- Gonzaga 78, San Francisco 73
