Monday Morning Shootaround

The big story of the day was America's darling Gonzaga getting knocked off by Arizona in the Desert Classic. This game was aired at 1:30 AM here, so I'll be watching it via TiVo later this morning and giving you my thoughts on it in after.

Here is the rest of Sunday's college hoops action:

  • Wake Forest 66, Wright State 53: Harvey Hale broke out of a season long shooting slump to hit 5-6 three's, leading to 17 points, as the Demon Deacons were able to stay undefeated. Hale hit three's on three straight possessions in the first half to help Wake build an 11 point lead, and then capped off an 11-0 second half run that pushed the lead to 21.
  • Villanova 70, La Salle 59: Corey Stokes had 18 points, Scottie Reynolds added 13, and the two combined to hit 7 3's as the Wildcats were able to hold on for a win in a tough game on the road against a Big 5 team, which is never an easy thing to do. Dante Cunningham played just 24 minutes because of foul trouble.
  • Arizona State 59, IUPUI 58 OT: The Sun Devils came out flat in the Desert Classic and managed to fall behind 39-23 early in the second half before their defense finally woke up. The Jaguars scored just five points in the last seven minutes and overtime, and ASU got 18 points on 6 3's from Rihards Kuksiks in the victory. James Harden finished with just 9 points, 4 boards, and 5 turnovers before fouling out.
  • Miami FL 70, Robert Morris 62: Jack McClinton had 24 points as the Hurricanes were able to hang on against RMU. The Colonials were behind by 12 at the half, but made it interesting down the stretch as they cut it to two with 6:00 left, but a 7-0 run by the U made it 64-55 and it was never it doubt from that point on.
  • Niagara 70, South Florida 55: Maybe the addition of Gus Gilchrist and Mike Mercer is not quite the saving grace the Bulls thought it would be.
  • Boston College 67, USC Upstate 55
  • Illinois-Chicago 66, Georgia Tech 60: Illinois-Chicago has now beaten Georgia Tech and Vanderbilt.
  • Nevada 62, Southern Illinois 48
  • Washington 84, Portland State 83
