Sunday Roundup

The upset of the night goes to Southwest Baptist, a D2 school that travelled to Salt Lake City and knocked off Utah 80-79. Luke Zeller had 28 points, 14 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 blocks for the Utes, but Southern Baptist, who controlled most of the game, was too much as they hit 16 3's.

The loss by Utah may have been overshadowed by the Washington Huskies getting knocked off by Portland 80-74. Jon Brockman put up 30 and 14 for the Huskies, but they got nothing from anyone else (Quincy Pondexter was held scoreless) on their roster as Portland, a West Coast Conference school (aka they play in Gonzaga's conference), led for most of the game.

Other notable scores:

  • George Mason 80, Vermont 79 OT - Darryl Monroe had 19 points and 17 rebounds (9 offensive) and made two free throws with one second left in OT to win it. Marqus Blakely had 24, 8 boards, 4 steals, and 4 blocks for the Catamounts.
  • UNC 86, Pennsylvania 71: Even without Tyler Hansbrough and Marcus Ginyard, the Heels handled the Quakers pretty easily. The story of the game were the two freshman that took over Hansbrough's minutes. Tyler Zeller had 18 points and Ed Davis went for 10 points and 14 boards.
  • Northeastern 70, Providence 66 - In Keno Davis's debut for the Friars, Matt Janning of NU had 24 points and the Huskies knocked off everyone's Big East sleeper.
  • Indiana 83, Northwestern State 65 - The Hoosiers win in Tom Crean's. It may be the only time you see a score like that this year.
  • Butler 58, Drake 48; Illinois State 69, Wright State 61
Best of the night:
  • Wink Adams, UNLV - Adams had 19 points in a 65-60 win over San Diego
  • Dionte Christmas, Temple - Christmas went for 26 and 7 in the Owl's 70-65 win against Charleston.
  • Jarvis Varnado, Mississippi State - Varnado only had 9 points, but he also had 11 boards and 7 blocks in the Bulldogs blow out win.
  • Lawrence Kinnard, UAB - Kinnard had 22 and 13 in the Blazers win, making up for an off night from Robert Vaden (2-13, 4 points)
  • Chris Singleton, Florida State - The freshman had a pretty nice debut for the Seminoles, getting 12 points and 17 boards.
  • Bobby Maze, Tennessee - Maze did his best to silence doubters in his first game with UT, going for 12 and 10 dimes with just one turnover.
  • Luke Babbitt, Nevada - Babbitt had 20 and 12 as the Wolfpack beat Montana State.
Six ranked teams will take the court on Sunday. Duke, playing their third game of the year, will get their first real test as Rhode Island will visit Cameron Indoor. The Rams lost bruising combo-forward Will Daniels to graduation, but return sharp shooter Jimmy Baron along with the A-10's second leading rebounder in Kaheim Seawright and athletic wings Lamonte Ulmer and Keith Cothran. The game tips at 4:30 PM and can be seen on ESPN U.
