Would you ever vote for someone based on who they are a fan of?

I'm not from Kentucky. I've never been to Kentucky. But I've read about Kentucky and I have a friend from Kentucky. And maybe it is because 99% of what I read involves college basketball, but it seems to me like there is nothing more important to the state than Big Blue.

How blue is the blood in the state of Kentucky? It must be pretty thick is a Congressional candidate thinks it can help him win an election.

Two thoughts immediately pop into my head.

1. How deep is the hatred for Duke in Kentucky that someone running for a spot in the Senate can claim himself a fan of the Wildcats when a good population of the state (Louisville fans) hates Kentucky?


2. The last time we saw basketball and politics cross paths in the Commonwealth, it didn't end so well.
   

Is anyone else a little worried by this? Would a Kentuckian really base his vote on what team a candidate is a fan of? I wouldn't change who I vote for if I found out a certain candidate was a fan of the Red Sox.

Then again, I don't vote.
