POSTERIZED: Tony Mitchell is "Mr. DVR"

Alabama's Tony Mitchell is the most prolific dunker in college hoops. No questions asked. Take it to the bank.

His hands frequent the rim so often that you need to set your DVR to record every Crimson Tide game on TV.

Alabama played Georgia Tech on Tuesday night, and "Mr. DVR" was once again on display. So much so, that he even did a bit of work on the defensive end.



This is just getting out of hand.

People, listen up:

IF YOU ARE GUARDING TONY MITCHELL, DO NOT LET HIM OUT OF YOUR SIGHT. DO NOT LET HIM BEHIND YOU, and for god-sake DO NOT FORGET WHERE HE IS ON THE FLOOR.

POSTERIZED: Your weekly dose of Tony Mitchell

Say what you will about Alabama's recent struggles. They've lost three of four, and are averaging just 66ppg this season. The Crimson Tide play tough defense, but are almost inept on offense.

I say "almost inept" because even their recent struggles haven't slowed down Tony Mitchell's path of dunk destruction.

Another game, another highlight reel sequence of T-Mitch dunks.



So, regardless of Alabama's recent struggles, any televised Crimson Tide game is must-DVR-material. In fact, we might just have to start calling Tony Mitchell "Mr. DVR", because you never want to miss a game.

POSTERIZED: Tony Mitchell. Need I say more?

There is still room for debate as to who the best dunker in the country is. But I'd argue that no player is as bountiful or as authoritative with his dunks as Tony Mitchell. Some might argue that it's Baylor's Quincy Acy. But in roughly 12 months, T-Mitch has logged roughly 12 #POSTERIZED-quality dunks.

Last night, in what was unquestionably the "Game of the Night", Alabama's Tony Mitchell put on a clinic against Georgetown, throwing down five dunks in 40 minutes. The best part about his performance is that his arsenal of dunks covered the gamut. He had two tip-dunks, two alley-oops and one fast-break slam.

Essentially, the dude just straight-up went off.



Yeah. Five dunks.

Call him "Five Slamma Jamma"

POSTERIZED: Tony Mitchell is a freak, plain and simple

Alabama knocked off both Maryland and Wichita State en route to tomorrow's final of the Puerto Rico Tip-Off tournament.

The star for the Crimson Tide has, without a doubt, been Tony Mitchell. The 6'6" forward has averaged 21.5 ppg and 9.5 rpg in the two games, but that's not what's gotten people's attention. Mitchell is an insane athlete, and he flaunted that athleticism in Puerto Rico ...

Alabama's Tony Mitchell was a three-time member of the 2010-2011 BIAH POSTERIZED class. Last week, I told you that he was one of the best dunkers in the country, and it took less than a full week for him to show us why.

Tony Mitchell's Florida high school gets exposed

There were plenty of issues regarding the eligibility status of top flight recruits this season.

The obvious one is the Enes Kanter saga that continually made national headlines, in large part due to the fact that Kanter went to Kentucky and was slated to play for John Calipari. That alone was enough to overwhelm the casual college hoops fan. But Kanter was not alone in his quest to play at the collegiate level. Josh Selby, the jewel of Bill Self's recruiting class, had his own issues getting cleared at Kansas, eventually being forced to sit out the first nine games of the season. All of this game as Renardo Sidney was finishing up his year and a half long suspension.

So we can forgive you if you suffered from eligibility overload.

But there was another story that flew under the radar.

Tony Mitchell, a top 20 recruit that was slated to attend Missouri, never got cleared by the Big 12; the league does not accept partial qualifiers. Much of that was due to some questionable happenings during his final high school season in the Dallas area. But the root of Mitchell's problems started when he attended high school in Florida. (For what it is worth, Mitchell ended up at North Texas, where he will be eligible to play in December.)

Yesterday, the Miami New-Times published an investigative piece on the high school that Mitchell attended when he was in Florida. Its an absolutely fascinating read -- a story in which Mitchell is only briefly mentioned -- but it helps shed some light on the corruption involved in amateur basketball. I strongly, strongly urge every one of you to go read the story.

After reading this, you may never again want to use the argument that high school coaches have a better moral compass than AAU coaches.

And you may also start to question why some of these start athletes are actually being ruled ineligible. Was it really due to their academic failings, or did they succumb to the allure of a coach trying to take advantage of them?

It boggles my mind that Alabama is in first-place in the SEC. This is the team that lost to Seton Hall, Iowa, St. Peter's and Providence.

It also boggles my mind that Tony Mitchell can get up like this, twice:



On a night where we were watching a dude dunk over a brand-new car while a live gospel-choir sang "I Believe I can Fly", Mitchell may have delivered the two best dunks of the night.

Tony Mitchell out at Missouri, in at North Texas?

We finally have some news on Tony Mitchell and, well, its not exactly good.

But it could be worse, I guess.

The NCAA made its final ruling on Mitchell's eligibility at Missouri, and once again, they ruled him ineligible. The original ruling was handed down on January 5th, but the school appealed on the 13th. Missouri has no such plans to pursue another appeal.


If you don't remember, Mitchell was the center of an academic scandal at Pinkston High in Dallas, and also spent three years at a high school in Florida that is accredited as a home schooling organization.

That doesn't mean that Mitchell's collegiate career is finished.

The top 20 recruit is headed to North Texas. He will first have to get into the school, but it appears as if that is going to happen. The Big XII forbids teams from taking non-qualifiers, but the Sun Belt -- the league in which North Texas plays -- has no such rule. Mitchell would have to sit out until Dec. 2011 and get his grades to the point that the NCAA rules him academically eligible (that could be difficult based on what we know about his high school years).

North Texas loses two of their top ten scorers of all-time this year to graduation, but their 2011 recruiting class is already very strong, headlined by borderline top 100 recruit Jordan Williams. With Mitchell also in the fold, the Mean Green -- who have been to two NCAA Tournaments the past four years and are currently 16-4 on the season -- shouldn't have to wait too long to rebuild their team.

POSTERIZED: Tony Mitchell can dunk too

The SEC is a difficult conference to figure out.

The East is stacked and the West blows.

Georgia beat Kentucky then lost to Vanderbilt. Vanderbilt beat Georgia but lost to South Carolina. South Carolina beat Vandertbilt but lost to Alabama. Arkansas beat Tennessee but lost to LSU. In fact, both LSU and Alabama, two horrifically-bad teams are 2-0 in conference play.

But despite this mass confusion, one thing remains constant: There are dudes in the SEC who can flat-out soar.

Vanderbilt's Jeffery Taylor did this, Georgia's Travis Leslie has done this, and Kentucky's Terrence Jone's did this.

But now we have Alabama's Tony Mitchell.

Tony Mitchell ineligible the first semester

Missouri got some bad news today as their star recruit, 6'8" forward Tony Mitchell, was ruled ineligible for the fall semester. If you remember, Mitchell was the player involved in the academic scandal at Dallas' Pinkston High. He was not allowed to graduate once the circumstances around the way he earned eligibility there as a senior, and his 52 absences in one school year, came to light.

According to a Jeff Goodman source, Mitchell isn't permanently ineligible for this season. But the NCAA isn't through reviewing his case yet and the deadline to enroll in classes at Mizzou came and went on Monday.


This is a big blow to the Tigers, but keep in mind this team does return four of their top five scorers, including leading scorer Kim English. And even with Mitchell, it was doubtful the Tigers would have made a run at the Big XII title.

The best case scenario for Mitchell is that he takes cares of his academic requirements while he sits out the first semester, getting himself eligible come December.

Tony Mitchell in more trouble

Last week, news broke that Tony Mitchell, a top 20 recruit committed to Missouri that played last season in the Dallas area, would not be graduating with the rest of his high school class.

The credits he accrued from his previous school didn't transfer to Pinkston, where he planned to attend his senior year. Pinkston allowed him to take nine tests over the course of two days to earn the core credits he needed to be considered a senior, with five coming over the span of a couple hours.

Sounds fishy, right?

Well, yesterday it got worse. From WFAA in Dallas:

Mitchell's record shows 52 days with at least one unexcused absence — roughly one-third of the school year.

From the beginning of school for the next seven months, Mitchell missed 102 classes due to unexcused absences, many of them coming immediately after his basketball season ended the second week of March.

Yet Mitchell continued to play for Pinkston, and — up until a few weeks ago — News 8 has confirmed Principal Norma Villegas was working with Mitchell in preparation for graduation.

What's more, a student may be declared truant after 10 or more days of unexcused absences within a six-month period, or if there are three unexcused absences in one month.

Something doesn't seem right here. Missouri may want to start preparing to play the season without Mitchell.

UPDATE: Missouri recruit Tony Mitchell may not be a Tiger next year

"LOL," Mitchell replied when asked whether the report meant he could not attend MU. “Naw. I will definitely be at Mizzou. Later on though."

With four of their top five leading scorers returning -- including star guard Kim English -- and an incoming recruiting class rated as one of the best in the country, Missouri's basketball team seemed poised to compete with Kansas and Kansas State atop the Big XII next season.

While that still may be the case, Mike Anderson's team took a bit of a hit today as a television station in Dallas is reporting that Tony Mitchell, a top 20 recruit and the star of the Tiger's recruiting class, will not be allowed to graduate from Dallas' Pinkston High School.

The controversy surrounds how Mitchell managed to get himself eligible for his senior year. The 6'8" forward began his high school career at the Center of Life Academy in Miami, a private school that is an accredited by a home schooling organization, but is not recognized by the Dallas school district. In other words, Mitchell's credits weren't going to transfer over to Pinkston, meaning that he would technically be a freshman when he enrolled. In November, Pinkston principal Norma Villegas allowed Mitchell to make-up those credits by taking nine course make-up exams over a two day span, five of which were in two hours. Once this fact was brought to light, the Dallas school district began an official investigation, took away Mitchell's credits, forced Pinkston to forfeit a game, and suspended the head coach for one game next season.

I'm not exactly sure what that means. Can Mitchell's tests be reinstated if the investigation comes back clean? Can he get college eligible by going to a prep school and completing the necessary course work over the summer? Next year?

I don't have those answers, but the results of the investigation will reportedly be announced within the next few days.

Until then, Anderson and company better prepare for life without Mitchell, which means that guys like rising junior Steve Moore and newcomers Ricardo Ratliffe and Kadeem Green will be that much more important in backing up Justin Safford and Laurence Bowers.
