Championship Week Scoreboard

Everyone loves the first weekend of the NCAA Tournament. Four straight days jam-packed with 12 hours of do-or-die college hoops is more than most people can handle.

But for junkies like us, the next 13 days are just as good, for it is when the true Madness takes place. Over the course of these two weeks, we whittle some 347 teams down to 30 conference champions (the Ivy doesn't have a tournament). Auto-bids will be won. Bubbles will be burst. Buzzers will be beaten. And most importantly, a 68 team bracket will be made.

The Real March Madness: Day 12

Here is what happened on Saturday:


Game of the Day: Washington 77, Arizona 75 OT

Arizona leading for most of the first half, Arizona had to play catchup in the second half, using an 8-0 run to turn a 59-55 deficit into a 63-59 lead with just under two minutes left in the game. Isaiah Thomas hit a three to cut the lead to one with 32 seconds on the clock, but Derrick Williams answered with an and-one in transition at the other end. After Terrence Ross hit a three to once again cut the lead to one, Momo Jones knocked down two free throws before CJ Wilcox got open for a three in the corner that tied the game with 10 seconds left. Jones missed a prayer at the buzzer, and we were headed to overtime.

In the extra frame, Arizona got a three from Kevin Parrom to tie the game with 20 seconds left setting up this final play, which only took place because Thomas waved off his coach when he wanted to call a timeout:

They were good too

- Akron 66, Kent State 65 OT: As you might imagine, a game between two rivals for a championship came down to the wire. After a wild sequence that ended regulation -- Kent State missed a jumper with six seconds left, but as Akron was pushing the ball the other way, it was stolen allowing KSU another shot -- the game headed to OT. In the extra frame, Kent State took an early three point lead, and after the teams traded basket, Brett McKnight hit two game-winning free throws with 13 seconds left and Zeke Marshall got his ninth block, a game-saver, as the Zips held on to win.



- UNC 92, Clemson 87 OT: North Carolina got 40 points out of Harrison Barnes as they came back from 14 points down and seven points down with three minutes left. Tyler Zeller hit a game-tying jump hook with 30 seconds left, and after Demontez Stitt failed to get off a good shot, UNC put the game away by scoring the first nine points of overtime.


Team of the Day: Penn State Nittany Lions

Penn State came very close to locking up an NCAA Tournament bid with their third straight win in the Big Ten Tournament. Talor Battle scored 25 points and hit 6-8 from three as the Nittany Lions knocked off Michigan State 61-48, a day after beating Wisconsin 36-33. If I'm Penn State, I want to beat Ohio State in the Big Ten finals to eliminate any doubt of getting into the dance, but it may be a moot point.

They were good too

- San Diego State Aztecs: San Diego State may have locked up a two seed in the tournament by beating BYU 72-54. The Aztecs have just two losses on the season (both the BYU) and are without a ton of good wins, so there may be some controversy if they do end up sneaking into a two seed.


Player of the Day: Harrison Barnes, North Carolina

The freshman phenom scored a career-high 40 points in the Tar Heels come-from-behind overtime victory over Clemson in the ACC quarterfinals. Barnes was 12-17 from the field including 6-8 from behind the arc and converted on 10 of 11 attempts from the foul line. Barnes was the first freshman in NCAA history to be named a pre-season All-American, and while he struggled early in the season, he has certainly lived up to the hype as he continues to progress. His 40 points set an ACC tournament record for freshman and scored the most points in a tournament game since 1995 when Randolph Childress of Wake Forest did it against Duke.

They were good too

- Isaiah Thomas, Washington: Thomas scored 28 points and handed out seven assists in Washington's overtime win against Arizona in the Pac-10 finals, but perhaps more importantly, he hit the buzzer-beating game-winner that gave the Huskies the tournament title.

- Nolan Smith, Duke: So much for that toe injury, right? Smith had 27 points and six assists as Duke knocked off Virginia Tech and moved on to face North Carolina in the ACC Tournament final.

Bubble Banter

- Alabama must now play the waiting game. Their 72-58 loss to Kentucky means they can do nothing more to persuade the committee to give them a bid. Right now, they are either "last four in" or "first four out".

- Clemson blew a 12-point lead and collapsed in overtime against North Carolina in the ACC semifinals. The Tigers will now have to hope no bid-theft takes place in order to get is as an at-large.

- I don't want to say that Penn State is a lock to make the Big Dance, but with the semifinal win over Michigan State, the Nittany Lions have put themselves into solid position for this afternoon.

The Real March Madness: Day 11

Everyone loves the first weekend of the NCAA Tournament. Four straight days jam-packed with 12 hours of do-or-die college hoops is more than most people can handle.

But for junkies like us, the next 13 days are just as good, for it is when the true Madness takes place. Over the course of these two weeks, we whittle some 347 teams down to 30 conference champions (the Ivy doesn't have a tournament). Auto-bids will be won. Bubbles will be burst. Buzzers will be beaten. And most importantly, a 68 team bracket will be made.

Here is what happened on Friday:
Kemba Walker had the most vicious buzzer-beater you will ever seen, Colorado got off the bubble, and a few teams got their bubbles busted.


Game of the Day: North Carolina 61, Miami (Fl) 59

North Carolina played so poorly in the first half that head coach Roy Williams yanked all five starters in favor of walk-ons. The Tar Heels had committed 14 first half turnovers and scored only two field goals in the first four minutes. But the starters eventually found their game and battled back. Miami led by 19 points with 9:56 remaining in the game, but Carolina closed the game on a 27-6 run. The Tar Heels' only lead came when there was no time remaining on the clock, which was a result of this great finish:



They were good too
- UConn 76, Syracuse 71 OT

This was the first time these teams have played in the Big East tournament since the six-overtime game in 2009, UConn and Syracuse picked up where they left off. Kemba Walker scored 33 points, and filled the stat sheet with 12 rebounds, 5 assists and six steals to lead the Huskies to their fourth win in four days. Scoop Jardine had 20 points to lead the Orange, including a pair of 3-pointers at the end of regulation to bring Syracuse back from the dead, and force overtime. Alex Oriakhi was dominant down low for for the huskies and reserve forward Tyler Olander had a career-night. Team of the Day: St. Joseph's Hawks

The Hawks pulled off the upset of the night, defeating No. 3 Duquesne in overtime of the Atlantic-10 quarterfinals. They won just four games during conference-play, but have now strung together three straight wins, two coming in the post-season. Duquesne rallied from an eight point deficit with seven minutes to play. For the final five minutes of regulation, it was a back-and-forth battle. Ronald Roberts scored on a slam-dunk with 1.5 seconds left to send the game into overtime. In the extra frame, the Hawks scored five quick points and kept the Dukes at bay. Sophomore guard Carlton Jones led the Hawks with a career-high 28 points.

They were good too

- Clemson Tigers

The Tigers win the award for "Most impressive victory in a must-win situation". Clemson destroyed fellow bubble-dweller Boston College 70-47 in the ACC quarterfinals. Boston College was never allowed to make this a competitive game. The Tigers never trailed and in the second half had a double-digit lead for all but about 2 minutes. Their longest scoring drought was just under 50 seconds. Demontez Stitt led the way with 20 points, 8 rebound and 4 assists. The Tigers now must face No. 2 North Carolina in the ACC semifinals.


Co-Player of the Day: Kemba Walker, UConn

"...Most valuable player in America, bar-none. You cannot question it." That's what Jim Calhoun had to say about his superstar guard after UConn's 76-71 overtime game in the Big East semifinals. UConn has now won four games in four days. In those four games, Walker has played 157 of 165 minutes and has scored 111 points. The 111 points has broken the previous Big East tournament record, the 84 set by Eric Devendorf in 2008. But Walker didn't just score points last night. He grabbed 12 rebounds, dished out five assists and had six steals. He didn't hit a game-winning buzzer-beater, but he did just about everything else.

Co-Player of the Day Jimmer Fredette, BYU

Imagine if a team had two players of Jimmer Fredette's caliber. Then imagine  those two Jimmers merging into one, forming a super-mega-Jimmer. Sounds a bit ridiculous, right? Well, that's essentially what happened last night in Las Vegas.

BYU had lost four straight games against New Mexico, and it was clear that Fredette wasn't going to let it happen again. Jimmer scored a career-high (and tournament-record) 52 points on 22-37 (59%) shooting, including 7-14 (50%) from behind the arc.  His 52 points accounted for 59% of his of his team's overall output.

Consider this: by halftime Fredette had scored 33 points, the same amount of points it took Wisconsin an entire game to score. In fact, Fredette outscored seven D-I programs last night. Jimmer may actually get an at-large bid all by himself.


They were good too

- Kalin Lucas, Michigan State

The senior leader rolled his ankle in the Spartans first round game against Iowa, and his availability for last night's game was uncertain. Not only did he play, he dominated. The guard scored a career-high 30 points in the Spartans must-win game over No. 2 Purdue, 74-56. He was8-15 from the field including 4-6 from behind the arc.



Bubble Banter

- Alabama beat fellow bubble-sitter Georgia in the quarterfinals of the SEC tournament. You would think this would have solidified Alabama's tournament status, right? Well their work isn't done. If they can beat Kentucky in the SEC semifinals, then the committee will have no choice but to let them in.

- The last thing Boston College needed was to suffer a 23-point defeat to another bubble team, and that's exactly what they did. The 70-47 loss to Clemson will likely burst the Eagles' bubble.

- Beating Boston College was big. But beating them convincingly was even bigger. Clemson is right there on the cusp of a bid, and unlike Boston College, they still have a chance to improve their status.

- Colorado got out to a big lead, then blew it, then got down big, then fought back, but ended up running out of time. But despite the 90-83, the Buffs should end up in the Big Dance.

- Georgia needed to beat Alabama and they didn't. But losing is overtime isn't as bad as it could have been. But now they are forced to sit and wait, and that's not what they wanted to do. They are looking like part of the "last four out" right now.

- Illinois needed to beat Michigan, and they didn't. I'm not sure if their bubble is completely busted or if they still may have an outside chance. but nonetheless, it's not up to them any more.
- No team has improved their bubble status in the past month as well as Michigan has. With the win over Illinois yesterday, it is likely that Michigan will get a bid come Sunday.

- Did you really think Michigan State would fold and force the committee to leave them out of the tournament for the first time in decades? The Spartans punched their dance ticket last night by throttling No. 2 Purdue 74-56.

- The good news for Penn State is that they won the game. The bad news is that the final score was 36-33. For now Penn State just needs to continue winning.

- USC was on the wrong side of the bubble entering last night's semifinal game against Arizona. Without the services of their head coach, the Trojans put up a valiant effort but ultimately lost, ending any hopes they had of making the tournament.

- Virginia Tech is in a sticky situation. Yes, they did get the win they needed, beating Florida State in the ACC quarterfinals, but the game was decided by a razor-thin overturned video-review. But with the win, they get to continue playing, and they face a Duke team may not have their best player. For the Hokies, it's simple: win, and you're in.

Game of the Day: UConn 76, Pittsburgh 74

And to think, there is a coach out there that doesn't believe Kemba Walker was good enough to make the Big East All-Conference First-Team. Walker scored 24 points including a step-back game-winning buzzer-beater to defeat top-seed Pittsburgh in the Big East Quarterfinals. On the final possession, Walker got the ball at the top of the key, burned the clock, and set up for a final drive. What happened next was instant-YouTube-gold:



The final play was designed for Walker to take the final shot. He had the option to pass it up to Jamal Coombs-McDaniel, but Walker had done so against Notre Dame, and Donnell Beverly could not handle the pass, and the Huskies lost 67-70. This time, Walker kept the ball and criss-crossed Gary McGhee like a new pair of shoelaces. Along with his 24 points, Walker also contributed five assists, grabbed five rebounds and had two steals. Pittsburgh led for most of the first half, getting up by as many as 12, but the Huskies clamped down on defense in the second and forced the Panthers to lose composure.

Alex Oriakhi was a big contributor in the second half. He sat during most of the first due to foul trouble, but was able to grab five of his seven rebounds in the second half. But the story of the game was Walker's shot. The whole sequence, Walker slicing-and-dicing McGee, taking a monster-step-back jumper to win the game, was one of the prettiest end-of-game sequences we may ever see.

They were good too:

- Miami (Fl) 69, Virginia 62 OT: Neither of these teams are going to the tournament unless they win the ACC tournament. But Miami put on a comeback of March Madness magnitude. The two teams were tied at 39 with six minutes to go when the Hurricanes hit a cold-streak. They went roughly five minutes, and by the time they scored their next point, they trailed 50-40. That's when The Cavaliers fell apart at the seems and Miami scored 10 points in just under 50 seconds.



The Hurricanes had scored only 12 second-half points up until that point. In overtime, Miami hit all five of their shots and was able to pull away for a seven point win.


- Norfolk State 55, Coppin State 53: Rob Hampton hit a layup with 2 seconds remaining to lift No. 6 Norfolk State over No. 3 Coppin State 55-53 in the quarterfinals of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference tournament. Coppin State rallied back from an 11-point first half deficit, and took the lead with eight minutes left in the game. Norfolk State trailed 51-44 with six minutes left before scoring seven unanswered points, tying it at 51 with less than four minutes to go. Coppin State missed the potential go-ahead jumper with 48 seconds left, and Kyle O'Quinn grabbed the rebound, setting up the final possession. O'Quinn, the six-foot-ten center for the Spartans, led the way with 10 points, 13 rebounds and 5 blocks.


Team of the Day: Colorado Buffaloes

The Buffs locked up an at-large bid with their huge win over No. 4 Kansas State in the quarterfinals of the Big-12 tournament. Kansas Stat was riding a six-game win streak coming into the game, but the duo of Alec Burks and Cory Higgins were too much for the Wildcats. The two wings combined for 52 points of the team's 87 points, and Andre Roberson grabbed 14 rebounds to go along with his 11 points (Roberson also threw down a filthy dunk). With the win, the Buffs complete the season sweep of Kansas State.


They were good too:

- East Carolina Pirates: The No. 8 Pirates defeated top-seeded UAB in the quarterfinals of the Conference-USA tournament, 75-70 in overtime. The Pirates had lost both regular season games against the Blazers, but were able to outscore the No. 1-seed in overtime 18-15. UAB's Aaron Johnson scored a career-high 39 points on 12-22 shooting. But the rest of UAB shot a combined 9-43. East Carolina bursted UAB's bubble, and the Pirates will have the chance to do it to another bubble team, when they face No. 4 Memphis in the semifinals on Friday.


Player of the Day: Devin Gibson, Texas-San Antonio

A day after Gibson logged a career-high 28 points en route to his second triple-double of the season, the senior guard was just four assists shy of doing it again. Gibson finished with 26 points, 11 rebounds and 6 assists as the No. 7 UT-San Antonio Roadrunners upset No. 3 Sam Houston State in the semifinals of the Southland Conference tournament. Gibson was 6-12 from the field and 11-15 from the charity stripe. UTSA will now face top-seeded McNeese State in the championship game.

They were good too:

- Michael Thompson, Northwestern: John Shurna, the Wildcats leading scorer had only two points, but Michael Thompson made up for it by providing a Big Ten tournament-record 35 points, as No.8 Northwestern defeated No. 9 Minnesota in the first round of the Big Ten tournament 75-65. Thompson was 11-22 from the field including 5-12 from behind the arc. He also made all eight of his foul shots. His previous scoring high was 23 points, which he scored against American back in December.

- Klay Thompson, Washington State: The Washington Huskies avoided being swept by the Cougars in the first round of the Pac-10 tournament, but they could not stop Klay Thompson, who recorded a tournament-record 43 points. Thompson sat out the last game of the regular season due to a suspension related to a marijuana arrest. Thompson was 15-29 from the field, including 8-17 from behind the arc.


Bubble Banter

- Boston College took care of business against Wake Forest, and if they can defeeat Clemson, another bubble team, BostoN College would probably secure one of the last at-large bids.

- Colorado did what they needed to do, as they beat Kansas State 87-75. If bid-theives stay at bay, Colorado is likely to lock up one of the final at-large bids. A semifinal win over Kansas would almost guarantee them a spot in March Madness.

- Colorado State's bubble is officially busted. They lost to New Mexico in the first round of the MWC tournament. The Rams would have had an outside shot at an at-large bid, but that is no longer the case.

- Georgia defeated Auburn in the first round of the SEC tournament, setting up a BubbleBuster match up against the Alabama. a win would likely put the Bulldogs in the "last four in" and a lost will send them packing for the N.I.T.

- Marquette was blown out by Louisville in the quarterfinals of the Big East torunament, but are probably safe. They got the win they needed on Wednesday night when they defeated West Virginia.

- Memphis' tournament hopes remain alive for now. They defeated No. 5 Southern Miss in the quarterfinals of the C-USA tournament. Memphis now faces No. 8 East Carolina in the semifinals. They will need to beat the Pirates in order to strengthen their chances at an at-large bid.

- Michigan State survived a scare against No. 10 Iowa in the first round of the Big Ten tournament. Despite the win, the Spartans have still lost five of their last ten games. They will now face No. 2 Purdue, and a win on Friday would almost guarantee them a spot in the tournament.

- Any outside shot that Oklahoma State may have had is now gone, thanks to a missed game-winning shot in their 63-62 loss to Kansas in the Quarterfinals of the Big-12 Tournament. Their bubble is officially busted.

- UAB, the top-seed in the C-USA tournament was considered on the bubble. But not anymore. They lost to No. 8 East Carolina in overtime and are now N.I.T-bound.

- UCLA's tournament status is now up in the air thanks to a head-scratching 17-point loss to Oregon. The Bruins last three losses have all come against non-tournament teams.

- USC beat Cal 70-56 to reaffirm their bubble-status. Another win for them would be ideal. But I think barring a bid-theft or two, the Trojans will get in.

- Everybody''s favorite bubble team, Virginia Tech, moved step closer to finally locking up an at-large bid by defeating Georgia Tech in the first round of the ACC tournament. A win today against Florida State would make them a near-lock.

- Washington would have been bubble-bound with a loss to Washington State, but the Huskies escaped 89-87, and wil now have a chance to cement their tournament spot with a quarterfinal win over No. 7 Oregon.

- If Washington still has a shot at an at-large bid, then Washington State definitely doesn't. A win last night would have given the Cougars three wins over Washington this season, and would have given them an outside-shot. But now, the NCAA tournament is out of reach.
